Mr. Frank J. Kovac, 86, of Myersville, Md., died at his home on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009. He was the husband of the late Maria Kovac.

Born June 7, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late Frank Joseph and Jenny Troja Kovacich. Mr. Kovac entered the United States Army and served with the Corps of Engineers in the Battle of the Aleutian islands. He was honorably discharged from the Army and later worked for many years as a professional engineer with Bechtel Corp. in their Nuclear Power Plant section and, following his retirement in 1980, has provided professional consulting to the company.

Frank's passion for many years were his numerous volunteer opportunities in the community. He was an active volunteer with the Western Maryland Hospital Center, where he worked with young people and teaching electronics and maintained wonderful roses in the center's gardens. He had also been an active volunteer with Hospice of Washington County; the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Martinsburg; and he spent many hours and personal financial resources in repairing and upgrading computers to donate to underprivileged children and families.

Mr. Kovac was an avid gardener and beekeeper, and for many years brewed acclaimed, award-winning mead.

He was a member of the Masons, Toastmaster's and Astronomy Club.

He is survived by his niece, Linda Kovacich Monahan and her husband Joseph R. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Wilson Rivera of Ridgefield, Conn.; and his dearest friends, Bill and Sandy Michael of NYC.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his goddaughter and niece, Mary Kovacich; and a brother, Edward Kovacich.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, from Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 E. Second St., Frederick, with Father Dan Goulet as the celebrant. Interment will be private.
