Joan L. Killingsworth Bowlus, 74

Joan L. Killingsworth Bowlus, age 74, a member of Boonsboro Family Worship Center, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md., surrounded by her family.

Born April 14, 1935, in Frederick, Md., she attended Frederick High School and furthered her education at Hagerstown Junior College.

Mrs. Bowlus was instrumental in the establishment of the Red Horse Steak House in Frederick, and held various other roles in the hospitality industry. She was also a certified nutrionist with the Head Start Program of Washington County, Md. She was an active member of a 12-step program for 27 years.

Throughout Mrs. Bowlus' life, she was involved in numerous community and charitable events. She spent many years volunteering with Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed reading, creating her family's favorite dishes, and sharing stories while spending time with her family and loved ones. A fond memory often shared was her friendship with the late Patsy Cline.


She was preceded in death by her mother, Norma S. Killingsworth; her father, Albert L. Killingsworth; two brothers, John W. Killingsworth and James G. Killingsworth; and an infant son, Victor Lorenz Conrad.

She is dearly missed and survived by her husband, Robert W. Bowlus I of Hagerstown; three sons, Glen E. Conrad Jr., MSW, of Baltimore, Md., David S. Conrad of Frederick, and Norman ("Tiger") Conrad and his wife, Pamela Conrad, of Falling Waters, W.Va.; two daughters, Sonie J. Hott and her husband, Riley W. Hott Jr., of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Marti Mitchell of Hagerstown; two stepchildren, Robert Wayne Bowlus II of Boonsboro, Md., and Julie Haines and husband, Jerry Haines, of Hedgesville; two grandsons, Tyler Hott and wife of Hedgesville and Joseph Brandon Conrad of Hagerstown; six granddaughters, Elizabeth Jean Hott of Hedgesville, Emily Nicole Conrad of Williamsport, Md., Emily Catelin Conrad of Frederick, Erica Beth Conrad of Williamsport, Heather Caitlyn Mitchell of Smithsburg, Md., and Victoria Quinn Mitchell of Smithsburg; one great-grandson, Ashton Liam Conrad of Colorado Springs, Colo.; eleven stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and many friends and loved ones.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Services will be at the conveniences of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
