Recreational projects approved in Washington Co.

ANNAPOLIS -- Gov. Martin O'Malley last week announced that the Board of Public Works approved recreational projects in six counties, including Washington County, through Program Open Space and the Community Parks and Playgrounds Program.

Washington County received approval for funding for the following projects:

o Hancock will receive $43,000 to replace outdated hazardous playground equipment in Widmeyer Park with handicapped-accessible equipment.

o Hagerstown will receive $35,000 to replace 20-year-old hazardous playground equipment in Funkhouser Park with barrier-free equipment.

o Hagerstown will receive $35,000 to replace 20-year-old hazardous playground equipment in Hager Park with barrier-free equipment consistent with NPSS and the ADA.

Other areas receiving project funding approval included Caroline County, $18,000 to improve the existing playground equipment, safety surfacing and shade facilities at Denton Elementary School Park; Carroll County, $50,000 to upgrade four parks in Westminster; Cecil County, $11,000 to install a 12-inch-high safety surface border around existing playground equipment at Meadow Park in Elkson; Prince George's County, $100,000 to replace aging and unsafe playground equipment at Roland B. Sweitzer Community Park Playground in Laure, which also will receive $58,000 to extend the walking/jogging path, clear downed trees, and place passive park amenities on 2 undeveloped acres at the 36-acre Riverfront Park.
