Antiques Appraisal Fair sorts trash, treasure

HAGERSTOWN -- It was a hopeful crowd, comprised of people toting every kind of item you can imagine -- old paintings, baskets, clocks and toys.

And they carried them in all sorts of containers, from plastic bags to a child's wagon.

They had questions and they came for answers.

When was it made? Where was it made? And, most importantly, how much was it worth?

A steady stream of people made its way to and from Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 on Saturday morning to find out if their possessions were trash or treasure.

It was the 2009 Antiques Appraisal Fair, sponsored by the Washington County Historical Society.

A fundraiser for the society, this is the third year for the fair, said William K. Beard, president of the board of directors.

"It's an event that's consistent with our mission -- to preserve and celebrate the history of Washington County," he said.

Beard said seven professional appraisers -- all volunteering their services -- were on hand to identify items from a variety of disciplines.

"It's an ideal time to bring something in that you've wondered about and be pleasantly surprised," he said.

Proceeds from the event will be used for general funds, Beard said.

"There's always a need," he said.

Beard said organizers expected a good turnout for the fair. About 200 items were appraised at each of the past two events.

Bob and Carol Shanholtz of Waynesboro, Pa., arrived with several boxes of items. They especially were interested in knowing more about a slag glass lamp, which had been left to a family member.

"We wanted to know the time frame and value," Bob Shanholtz said. "It's not something we want to get rid of. It's a curiosity -- something we want to know more about."

The couple said they left pleased with the answers they received.

"It was nice to have an expert's opinion rather than trying to narrow down the information ourselves," Carol Shanholtz said. "It was an interesting experience."
