Grace wins national tourney

DAYTON, Tenn. -- Grace Academy blanked Veritas Christian 6-0 in the championship game of the National Association of Christian Athletes Division II tournament Friday.

Caleb Serafini had two goals for the Knights (25-2-1), while Andrew Michael, Zack Morgan, Pat Salvagno and Luke Bunting each scored one. Kenny Frederickson recorded the shutout in goal.

Bunting was named the Best Offensive Player of the tournament, while teammate Sean Koontz was named the Best Defensive Player. Serafini, Salvagno, Morgan and Michael made the all-tournament team.

On Thursday, Bunting had a hat trick and Salvagno scored the other goal as Grace defeated Summit Christian 4-1 in the semifinals. The Knights went 2-0-1 in pool play to advance to the semis.


Williamsport 1, Fort Hill 0

CUMBERLAND, Md. -- Bryan Whitmore scored the game winner on a penalty kick with 20 minutes left in the second half to lift Williamsport over Fort Hill in the Maryland Class 1A West semifinals.

Alex Aleshire had 11 saves to record the shutout for the Wildcats (11-4-2).

Williamsport will play Mountain Ridge (16-0) in the region finals Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Bulldogs, Indians fall in W.Va. state semifinals

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- A pair of area teams fell in the semifinals of the West Virgnia state tournament.

In Class AAA, Martinsburg (15-9) lost 2-0 to Parkersburg. In Class AA-A, Berkeley Springs (10-8-4) lost 4-1 to Charleston Catholic.

In the other semis, Woodrow Wilson beat Fairmont Senior 3-0 in Class AAA, while Weir beat Oak Hill 4-1 in Class AA-A.

The championship finals are today.


Hurricane 1, Jefferson 0

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Jefferson's season came to an end in the West Virginia Class AAA state semifinals. The Cougars finished with a 19-3 record.

Hurricane will meet University -- a 1-0 winner over George Washington -- in the final today.


Susquehanna Township 41, Waynesboro 19

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Adrian Arp rushed 11 times for 113 yards and three touchdowns to lead Susquehanna Township, which cruised to a 28-12 halftime lead in a win over Waynesboro (2-8).

Quarterback Ben Dupree was 11-of-14 passing for 132 yards and a touchdown and also had 11 carries for a team-high 184 yards and a score for Susquehanna Township (9-1).

State College 46, Chambersburg 14

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Alex Kenney paced State College with two rushing touchdowns and a 73-yard interception return for a third score as the Little Lions outscored Chambersburg 39-0 after the first quarter en route to a road victory.

Matt Mazzara added two rushing TDs for State College (8-2), which took advantage of 323 yards rushing to overpower the Trojans (5-5).

ConRoy Smith scored both of Chambersburg's touchdowns in the first quarter on a 95-yard kick return and a 6-yard run.

Boiling Springs 49, James Buchanan 6

BOILING SPRINGS, Pa. -- David Cook scored on a 19-yard run, a 66-yard punt return and a 41-yard pass from Jared Bliss for Boiling Springs, which outgained visiting James Buchanan 489-133 and led 49-0 after three quarters.

Jake Starner ran nine times for 161 yards and two touchdowns, while Drew Hunter and Bliss also ran for a score each for the Bubblers (6-4).

The Rockets' only touchdown came in the fourth quarter as Kace Worrell caught a TD pass from Coy Quivers, who led JB (1-8) with 78 rush yards.

Grace third in national tourney

DAYTON, Tenn. -- Grace Academy defeated Hickory Christian 25-17, 25-15 to place third in the National Association of Christian Athletes Division II tournament.

For the Knights, Jamie Shurnitski and Lauren Serafini were named to the all-tournament team.


Shepherd 3, Bluefield State 0

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- Shepherd swept Bluefield State, 25-13, 25-21, 25-14.

The Rams (19-11, 11-2 WVIAC) have won three straight.


Byron 15K set for Dec. 12

The annual Goodloe E. Byron Memorial 15K Run will be held Dec. 12 at 9 a.m. in Emmitsburg, Md.

The race starts and ends at Echo Field at Mount St. Mary's University.
