Q: Since we moved here four years ago, we have enjoyed reading the Ask SCORE monthly column. Can you tell us how long SCORE has been around and a little bit about the organization?

A: This year, SCORE celebrates 45 years of volunteer service and mentoring to help small businesses nationwide start up, grow and succeed. During that time, SCORE has grown to close to 400 chapters across the U.S.

The chapter in Hagerstown was chartered in 1983 and consists of 25 male and female volunteers.

"SCORE's 45th anniversary is the perfect time to raise awareness of the entrepreneurial spirit that drives the American economy," said Bob Jones, chairman of SCORE's Hagerstown chapter. "Our counselors provide clients information on a wide range of topics that impact business owners and startup entrepreneurs. They have extensive experience in small business startups and in setting a course for business success. SCORE thanks them for donating their time and expertise to support the local community."

"Our 45th anniversary focuses on the valuable contribution that volunteers make to local entrepreneurs with mentoring and advice that meets their business needs," said Ken Yancey, SCORE's national CEO. "SCORE has a proven track record of both creating and saving jobs by improving small business survival rates and accelerating small business formation."

Nationally, SCORE provides free and confidential business mentoring to more than 350,000 small business clients each year. There are 27.2 million small businesses in the U.S. and 677,200 new businesses opened in 2008. Small businesses represent 99.7 percent of U.S. employees and are responsible for about 75 percent of the new jobs created each year.

Since 1964, SCORE, "Counselors to America's Small Business," has assisted more than 8.5 million aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners through counseling and business workshops. More than 12,400 volunteer business counselors serve their communities through entrepreneurial education dedicated to the formation, growth and success of small businesses.
