MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Evelyn Shimp Oates, 90, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at WVUH-East/City Hospital.

Born in Brunswick, Md., on April 25, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Mosse Shimp.

She was a 1937 graduate of Martinsburg High School and attended Strayer Business College in Washington, D.C.

She is survived by two sons, Max O. Oates Jr. of Martinsburg, and Dr. Theodore Kensell Oates II and wife Ann of Rochester, N.Y.; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Oates of Shepherdstown; five grandchildren, T.K. Oates III, Alison O. Hart, Max O. Oates III, Michael Oates and Megan Oates; and a nephew, Douglas Kendall Jr.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Max O. Oates; a daughter, Evelyn Louise "Boo" Oates; two sisters, Violet Shimp Kendall and Marguerite Louise Shimp; and a nephew, William Kendall.

She owned Martinsburg Lumber Co. for more than 50 years. She also managed real estate and raised Black Angus cattle through the years.

She was a longtime member of City Hospital Board of Trustees, Gateway Regional Health System Board of Directors and City Hospital Foundation Board of Directors.

Other community activities included City Hospital Auxiliary, City Hospital Alumnae Association Honorary Member, F&M Bank - Martinsburg Director, Soroptimist International of Martinsburg Charter Member and Woman of Distinction, and a member and former Trustee of Trinity United Methodist Church. She also received numerous honors and recognition through the years as a dedicated volunteer and community leader.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at Brown Funeral Home with the Rev. John R. Yost officiating. Private interment will be at Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at the funeral home.
