North Hagerstown girls third in 2A West

MIDDLETOWN, Md. -- The North Hagerstown girls placed third out of 11 teams Thursday at the Maryland Class 2A West championships to qualify for the state meet Nov. 14 at Hereford. The top six advanced.

Century scored 49 points to successfully defend its title, while Liberty edged North 89-95 for second.

"It was a great race. I'm very pleased with our performances," North coach Lindsay Zerance said. "Liberty just slipped by us, but I'm not concerned about them until the day of states."

Century's Maura Linde won the 3-mile race in 17:55.

Washington County champion Alison Harrell placed eighth in 19:32 to lead the Hubs, while Christine Brugh was 15th (20:08), Alexis Eichelberger was 18th (20:17), Amanda Martin was 19th (20:23) and Emily Simmons was 35th (21:35).

Walkersville won the boys team title. North did not advance any boys to states.

South boys 11th in 3A West

GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- The South Hagerstown boys finished 11th out of 13 teams at the Maryland 3A West meet and did not advance any runners to states.


Sam Jones was the top Rebel on the 3.1-mile course, placing 31st out of 90 runners in 18:50.

The South girls had an incomplete team with only one runner.


Boonsboro 2, Northern Garrett 1

ACCIDENT, Md. -- Emily Horst's goal in the 72nd minute lifted Boonsboro to an upset victory over second-seeded Northern Garrett (13-3) in the Maryland Class 1A West semifinals.

Jaclyn Fiola also scored, while Jen Sherdel had an assist and Becky Smith made five saves for the Warriors (8-7-1).

Boonsboro will go on the road to play in the region final Tuesday against top-seeded Mountain Ridge (15-0), which routed Southern Garrett 5-0 in the other semifinal.


Musselman 3, Hedgesville 1

INWOOD, W.Va. -- Taylor Allen had 15 kills to lead No. 1 seed Musselman to a 25-17, 25-20, 9-25, 25-10 championship victory over No. 2 seed Hedgesville in the West Virginia Class AAA Region II Section 1 final.

Emily Funkhouser had 10 kills and four aces, Kortney Jenkins and Jessica Felicio had six aces each, Taylor Oates had 26 assists and Sammy Deter had 18 digs for the Applemen.

For Hedgesville, Aerial Munson had 19 assists, Lauren Hockenberry had nine kills and two blocks, Cassidy Ferrari had 13 digs and Kelly Rudy had six kills.


North Hagerstown 19, South Hagerstown 8

Glenville State 21, Shepherd 10

GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- Glenville State improved to 7-4 (6-2 in the WVIAC) with the victory over Shepherd (6-4, 5-3) on Thursday night.
