BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Robert Lee Hess, 65, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at his home. He was born May 18, 1944, in Berkeley Springs to the late William H. and Maud V. Brannon Hess. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard A. Hess, Franklin H. Hess and William H. Hess.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and graduated as a Special Forces Ranger. He was an asphalt paver, nurse and farmer. He was of the Christian faith and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1483. He was an avid gun collector.

He is survived by one daughter, Lynne I. Gomez of Frederick, Md.; three sons, Robert E. Hess and Kelly L. Hess, both of Berkeley Springs, and Casey L. Hess of Hedgesville; three sisters, Emeline V. Golden of Pennsylvania, Debra A. Ray of Hancock, Md., and Margaret F. Kump of Gore, Va.; six brothers, Edward B. Hess of Norfolk, Va., John K. Hess of Berkeley Springs, David B. Hess of Hedgesville, Joseph L. Hess and Samuel C. Hess, both of Hancock, and Michael J. Hess of Westminster, Md.; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; five stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandson; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his former wives, Lee Parrish and Beverly Hess.

Friends will be received Friday, Nov. 6, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home. Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Victory Tabernacle in Berkeley Springs with viewing one hour prior. Pastor Carl Clark will be officiating. Burial to be in The Hess Family Cemetery in Berkeley Springs with military graveside services by the Tri-State Honor Guard. Donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle at 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401.
