WILLIAMSPORT -- When it comes to speed, strength and endurance, Washington County runners often seem to have the right mixture of all three.

"We have a lot of great runners in this county," Smithsburg coach Ray Shriver said. "It's just fun to watch."

Perhaps no one enjoyed the Maryland Class 1A West Cross Country Championships as much as Shriver did Thursday at Williamsport. His Leopards won the girls team title, and his star senior, David Wilson, ran away with the individual boys crown.

The Williamsport boys completed the county's sweep of the team titles, winning the region championship for the second straight year.

"The dominance just shows the depth of the talent here," Shriver said.

What made Williamsport's victory even more impressive was that the Wildcats only had one of their top-seven runners back from last year -- senior Graylon Wright.

"We went 30 years here without winning a regional title, and then we won last year and we won again this year," Williamsport coach Randy Buchman said. "And there are 13 different boys that are a part of it. That's what's exciting to me."

Sophomore Evan Hardy placed fifth in 16:54 on the 3-mile course to lead the Wildcats, who topped the field of 11 teams with 67 points. Allegany was second with 78.

The rest of Williamsport's scoring was done by Danny Quinn (10th, 17:30), Wright (14th, 17:47), Cody Bowman (15th, 17:50) and Michael Wyant (23rd, 18:18).

Wilson won the race in 15:42 to remain unbeaten this season. Allegany junior Ian MacFawn, who also entered the race undefeated, finished a distant second in 16:20.

"I went out pretty quick and then did a surge at 1 1/2 miles," said Wilson, who was all alone after that.

Wilson won the county title last week at Williamsport in a course-record 15:34, and was on pace to break it again Thursday. But he said he slowed in the final mile to save something for the state meet on Nov. 14.

"(The record) wasn't the goal today," Wilson said. "Next week is the one that counts."

Smithsburg held off runner-up Southern Garrett, last year's champ, 45-54 for the girls title. Sophomore Lauren Johnson placed third in 20:35 to lead the Leopards.

"That was really fun. I enjoyed it," Johnson said. "I'm really proud of my team. Everyone pushed themselves to the limit, and I'm pretty sure everyone PR'd."

Stephanie Breen placed seventh in 21:18 for the Smithsburg girls, while Taylor Cline was eighth (21:25), Suzanne Reed was 13th (21:50) and Lyndsie Delosier was 14th (21:54).

"The girls really took this on as their mission. They really wanted to be regional champs," Shriver said. "It's a testament to their hard work and dedication to a goal."

Other top-20 finishers included Boonsboro's Sarah Zielinski (10th, 21:34) and Clear Spring's Taylor Reid (17th, 22:11) in the girls race, and Boonsboro's Evan Moser (fourth, 16:40), Clear Spring's Brandon Schildtknecht (19th, 18:02) and Smithsburg's Jacob Shriver (20th, 18:05) in the boys race.

Catoctin's Leah Stone took the individual girls title in 20:25.
