Veterans Day ceremonies planned

Sunday, Nov. 8

Approximately 10:30 a.m. -- Funkstown American Legion Post 211 will lay a wreath at the veterans memorial on legion property, then will lay a wreath at the veterans monument at Baltimore Street and Alt. U.S. 40.

Tuesday, Nov. 10

9 a.m. -- Southern Fulton Elementary School's auditorium in Warfordsburg, Pa., hosts a Veterans Day event. Retired Navy Cmdr. William Hine of Harrisonville, Pa., will speak and local veterans will talk about what it means to be a veteran.

4 p.m. -- The City of Hagerstown hosts a wreath-laying ceremony at the Memorial Boulevard Veterans Monument on East Memorial Boulevard, across from Bester Elementary School.

6:30 p.m. -- Salem Avenue Elementary's third- and fifth-graders perform a Salute to Heroes program honoring veterans and members of emergency services.


Wednesday, Nov. 11

9 a.m. -- The Joint Veterans Council of Washington County hosts a ceremony at the veterans memorial in Martin L. "Marty" Snook Memorial Park in Halfway. Jim Warner of Rohrersville, a Vietnam War POW, will speak. The Marine Corps League color guard from AMVETS Post 10 will present the colors. There will be a wreath-laying.

10:30 a.m. -- Clear Spring High School holds a ceremony in its auditorium. Clear Spring resident and retired Coast Guard Cmdr. Jeffrey Brandt will speak. There will be patriotic readings and music by the Clear Spring High School band and show choir. A slide show will honor veterans related to students and faculty.

11 a.m. -- The American Legion Auxiliary from the Morris Frock post hosts a ceremony at the Washington County Courthouse on West Washington Street in Hagerstown. U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Charles William Lyon, a Smithsburg High School graduate, will be the speaker. Includes patriotic music and a gun salute by Morris Frock Post 42's honor guard.

11 a.m. -- Williamsport American Legion hosts a ceremony at the legion, 400 S. Conococheague St. Speakers will include American Legion Department of Maryland Commander Orlyn Oestereich of Boonsboro and American Legion Auxiliary Department of Maryland President Mary Lou Kline. Springfield Middle School Band will perform and there will be a wreath-laying.

11 a.m. -- Antietam American Legion Post 236 hosts a wreath-laying ceremony in Sharpsburg Town Square, featuring the honor guard of the W.Va. Air National Guard's 167th Airlift Wing from Martinsburg, W.Va.; the Saint James School Choir; and guest speaker Keith Snyder, a park ranger at Antietam National Battlefield.

Noon to 1 p.m. -- Valley Mall in Halfway hosts a performance by the New Horizons Band.

2 p.m. -- Hagerstown Community College hosts an event at the flag pole in front of the administration building. The speaker will be Marine Capt. Robert T. "Bo" Myers, a Vietnam War-era veteran who is director of athletics and leisure studies at HCC. The Washington County Sheriff's Department will hold an honor guard ceremony.

2 p.m. -- Smithsburg will hold a ceremony at Veterans Park on Water Street. Featured speaker is Lt. Col. Jeffery M. Rives, comptroller for the 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard. Music by Smithsburg Middle School Band.

7 p.m. -- Third-graders at Hickory Elementary School in Halfway present "A Patriotic Tribute to Our Veterans," which will include patriotic songs. Veterans will be given certificates honoring them for their service. The Civil Air Patrol will present the colors.
