Catherine Spicher marks 100th birthday with family, friends

November 04, 2009

Catherine Spicher was recognized recently by friends and family in honor of her 100th birthday. When asked about her secret of longevity, Catherine quipped, "I don't know. Do you have any suggestions?"

Catherine, born Oct. 29, 1909, was the oldest of seven children - five brothers and one sister. Two of her brothers are still living.

Born in Millersburg, Pa., she married Charles Spicher on March 10, 1931, and together they had one son, Carl Spicher. She has three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Catherine worked in a shoe factory until moving to Hagerstown so that Charles could work at Fairchild Aviation. She opened and ran a boarding home during those years. When their son, Carl, started Spicher's Appliance, both Charles and Catherine helped with the store.

They were energetic travelers, visiting most countries throughout their lives. Catherine continued to travel after Charles' death in 1976.

A member of Christ Reformed Church for more than 60 years, Catherine is also a member of the Lady Elks and the Lioness Club of Hagerstown.

The last six months have been difficult for Catherine. Due to a fall, she had her first helicopter ride, but it was to Baltimore's Shock Trauma Unit. After a short hospital stay, she now lives at Coffman Nursing Home. She has made several friends and participates in their activities. Most of all, she enjoys frequent visits from her many family members.
