RESTON, Va. - Katherine Teresa Hannigan, 50, of Reston, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Born April 17, 1959, in New Haven, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Francis T. and Anna Jane (Hollyday) Hannigan.

She was a 1977 graduate of Guilford High School in Guilford, Conn., received a bachelor's degree in 1981 from Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Va., and later received a master's degree in medical social work from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.

She is survived by sisters, Anne Swift of Belmont, Mass., Pat Latkovski of Frederick, Md., Peggy Day of Petaluma, Calif., and Mary Barrett of Lynchburg; brothers, Frank Hannigan of Arlington, Va., David X. Hannigan of Eminence, Mo., Greg Hannigan of Hagerstown, Md., Robert Michael Hannigan of Marin County, Calif., and John Christopher Hannigan of Bellows Falls, Vt.; intended spouse, Edward Surma of Reston; her aunt, Jean S. Hollyday of Hagerstown; and her uncle, John J. and aunt, Beverly Hannigan, of Houston, Texas. Her cousins, nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews are too numerous to name individually, but each is cherished more than the next. Her close network of friends from her childhood and her professional life remained steadfast all the days of her life.

A Mass will be celebrated in her memory at Our Lady of Grace Monastery, North Guilford, Conn., at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009. A more extensive memorial service will be held in Guilford during National Donate Life Month in April 2010.
