Veterans Day ceremony planned at courthouse

Morris Frock Auxiliary Unit 42 of the American Legion will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony and wreath laying Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Washington County Courthouse in Hagerstown.

Brig. Gen. Charles William Lyon of the U.S. Air Force will be the guest speaker.

He grew up in Hagerstown and Leitersburg.

Veterans honored

On Friday, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., American Legion Morris Frock Post 42 will hold its Salute to Veterans.

Dinner will be served. For reservations, call 301-733-7676. The event is for members and guests.

On Saturday, a bar bonanza will be held starting at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $10 per person and are available at the bar. For more information, call 301-733-7676.

A harvest dance is planned for Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Post Home at 405 Northern Ave. in Hagerstown. The Dave Winter Group will perform from 8 to 11 p.m. Tickets cost $12 per person and can be purchased at Post 42. Dessert and snacks are included in the ticket price.


Way to go, Hubs

Congratulations to the North Hagerstown High School Hubs Marching Band for winning the Chapter 13 title for the third straight year.

Good luck at the Atlantic Coast Championships, which will take place Sunday in Hershey, Pa.

TOPS 446

At the TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 446 meeting, Ruth was named the "Thinner Winner," which brought cheers and applause. After recent heart surgery, the success was exactly what the doctor ordered. Way to go, Ruth.

Various hobbies and collections of the group were shared, which made Fun Day interesting. Some of the presentations were directly related to health and weight-loss issues.

Teresa and Rita were welcomed as visitors, and by the end of the meeting, they became new members.

North High Band Boosters

The North Hagerstown High School Band Boosters Club will meet Monday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at the school.

A bonanza is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Williamsport Fire Hall. Tickets cost $40 per couple, which includes meal, drinks, snacks and dance with a DJ. There will be new jars, 50/50 and a chance to win $1,000.

TOPS 0077

On Oct. 26, Ife, Barbara and Bonnie from Williamsport Curves told TOPS Chapter 0077 how important strength training and exercise programs are when trying to lose weight. They said that along with counting calories, portion control and changing eating habits, everyone needs exercise.   

Elsie Horst won the Get-R-Done contest with a 4 3/4-pound loss and Eileen Renwick won the monthly KOPS contest. 

The group welcomed a new member, Bonnie H.

Nonperishable foods will be brought in at the next meeting and donated to food banks in Hagerstown. Some of the members walked in the Breast Cancer Awareness walk and raised more than $700. Two members walked in the Alzheimer's walk and raised $340.

St. Mary School

The bonanza will be Saturday at the Elks Lodge on Robinwood Drive.

Goretti news

The Goretti Players will present Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at HCC's Kepler Theater.

The school will hold "A Taste of Spain" Saturday, Nov. 14, at Beaver Creek Country Club. The event will include Spanish cuisine with Spanish wines, live music, and live and silent auctions.

Proceeds will benefit the performing arts at SMGHS, provided by the Cumberland Valley School of Music.

Repeat Performance thrift shop to offer sale

The Washington County Hospital Auxiliary's Repeat Performance thrift shop will open its annual Christmas Decor Boutique on Tuesday at 18706 Crestwood Drive (behind Dunkin' Donuts) in North Hagerstown.

The "shop within a shop" will feature multiple Christmas decorations, some of which are traditional and some contemporary. Store hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shop is closed Sundays and Mondays and all major holidays, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Proceeds will go to the auxiliary, which raises funds for the hospital and the soon-to-open medical center off Robinwood Drive.

Salute to marriage 

On Sunday, Nov. 8, at 5:30 p.m., Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave. in Hagerstown, will celebrate marriages, and especially people's marriage to Christ. Dinner will follow the service. The public is invited.

Thanksgiving Eve 

On Wednesday, Nov. 25, at 7 p.m., a community Thanksgiving Eve service will be held at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 1020 Maryland Ave. in Hagerstown.

Area churches will gather to give thanks for what the Lord has provided.

The Salvation Army Band and a guest speaker will lead the service. The public is invited.
