Deane successfuly defends crown

GOLF

Bernie Deane, of Frederick, Md., won a second consecutive Washington County City Championship on Sunday.

Deane weathered wind and wet ground conditions enough to shoot a 4-over par-76 for a 54-hole 229 total. The final round of the event was contested at Black Rock Golf Course.

Chris Bushey finished second with a 231 after Sunday's round of 76. Chris Taylor finished with the best round of the day with a 2-over par-74 and was third at 232.

Others included: Denny Stoner (78-238), Tracy Piper (85-244), Henry Kayes (77-246), Jason Fauble (82-251) and Rich Moyer (79-257). Paul Mellott withdrew.

BOY'S SOCCER

MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- Mercersburg Academy closed out the Mid Atlantic Prep League season with a 3-0 loss to Peddie School on Saturday.

Peddie School held a 1-0 halftime lead. Mercersburg is 8-7-1.

COLLEGE SOCCER

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- No. 18-ranked University of Charleston scorched Shepherd University 6-1 as the Rams ended the season with a 6-11-1 record and 3-6-1 in the WVIAC.

Shepherd scored in the 32nd minute on a goal by Jeffers Frazier. Derek Munro, a Williamsport graduate, saw time in goal and combined with Edgar Zuniga to make five saves.
