Cougars' girls, Doughty state champs in W.Va. Class AAA

ONA, W.Va. -- Jefferson's girls won the West Virginia Class AAA cross country title, edging University 73-80 at the state championships at Cabell Midland High School.

In the Class AAA boys race, the Cougars' Brandon Doughty finished in 16 minutes, 32 seconds to win the title by 19 seconds over Morgantown's Cody Pelliccioni.

Jefferson's boys finished second to Cabell Midland, which ran away with 37 points. The Cougars scored 82.

Jefferson placed three runners in the top nine in the girls race. Andrea Nickerson was sixth in 19:54, Alyssa Boucher was eighth in 20:03 and Lindsey Hash was ninth in 20:03.

Musselman's Austin Rigsby placed 10th in the Class AAA boys race in 17:25.

In Class AA-A, Berkeley Springs finished second in the boys team standings with 98 points -- Grafton won the title with 57.

The Indians' girls finished third in a tight race, scoring 88 points. St. Mary's won the title with 81 points and Grafton was second with 87.

For Berkeley Springs' boys, John Mundey finished second in 17:25 and Jake Wise was 10th in 18:02. For the girls, Macy Houck was seventh in 21:26.
