Broadfording stuns Grace in 2OT

Michael Torres scored three minutes into the second overtime to give Broadfording a 1-0 upset victory over Grace Academy on Thursday in a Maryland Christian Schools Tournament semifinal.

Andrew Wyand had the assist on Torres' goal, while Donnie Fritz made 12 saves to record the shutout for the Lions (17-4), who will play in the tournament final Saturday in Annapolis.

Kenny Frederickson had four saves for the Knights (21-2), who beat Broadfording twice in the regular season by scores of 6-2 and 3-0.

Broadfording defeated Rockbridge 5-0 in the MCST quarterfinals on Tuesday. Stephen Torres and Gabe Hirsch each scored twice and Jordan Whitt added a goal.


Smithsburg 3, Southern Garrett 2

OAKLAND, Md. -- Joey Barvir scored two goals, including the game-winner in double overtime, as Smithsburg beat Southern Garrett (1-14) in the first round of the Class 1A West playoffs.

Yusif Kadir had a goal and an assist, Barvir and Alex Brown each had an assist and Dan Gillen made five saves for the Leopards (3-12).


Mercersburg 3, Saint James 0

SAINT JAMES -- Paige Harry, Lilly Hebert and Mackenzie Quinn each scored a goal for Mercersburg Academy in a victory over the Saints.

Quinn and Ana Kelly each added an assist for the Blue Storm (7-8-1).

Rachel Herrera made 21 saves for Saint James (3-5-3).


Clear Spring 3, Hancock 0

HANCOCK -- Lily Pinkham had 10 kills and four blocks for the Blazers in a 25-3, 25-13, 25-8 sweep of Hancock.

Lindsey Lacy had nine kills and four aces, Sarah Elwood had 16 service points and nine aces, Megan Micco had 23 assists and Breanne Purdham added 12 digs for the Blazers (11-3).

Maureen Leavy had three blocks and three kills, Katie Cropp had three digs and Sierra Fink had four digs and three service points for the Panthers (4-11).

JV: Clear Spring, 2-0.

FSK 3, Williamsport 0

WILLIAMSPORT -- Sam Kelly had 12 kills for Williamsport in a 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 loss to Francis Scott Key.

Trish Leigh had six kills and 20 digs, Ariah Giles had five kills and nine blocks and Paige Kitchen added 20 assists for the Wildcats (5-10).

JV: FSK, 2-0.

Saint James 3, Mercersburg 2

MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- Callan Spicher had 14 kills, 14 service points and 14 digs to lead Saint James to a 25-10, 22-25, 25-18, 16-25, 15-7 win at Mercersburg Academy.

Lindsay Gish had 39 assists and 15 service points for the Saints (10-2), while Jordan Wills added 13 kills.

Sarah Kolanowski had eight digs, seven kills, nine service points and five blocks for the Blue Storm (3-9). Taylor Riley had 10 kills, six digs and five aces, Melody Gomez had 10 kills, five digs and three blocks, Brookke Mahaffey had 20 assists, eight digs and four aces, and Vivi Hyarinthe added three blocks.

JV: Mercersburg 2-1.

McConnellsburg 3, Fannett-Metal 0

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. -- A'leese Dickerson had 22 kills, eight digs and five aces to lead McConnellsburg to a 25-21, 25-11, 25-15 sweep of Fannett-Metal on Senior Night.

Lisa DeShong had 33 assists and nine digs, Emily Watkins had eight kills and five aces, Valerie Green had 12 digs and Courtney DeShong added 12 digs and eight aces for the Spartans (13-5).

JV: Fannett-Metal 2-0.

Chestnut Ridge 3, Southern Fulton 0

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. -- Rachel Norris had 12 digs for Southern Fulton (3-16) in a 25-10, 25-11, 25-8 loss to Chestnut Ridge.


PIAA District 5-AA meet

BEDFORD, Pa. -- Southern Fulton's girls won the team title by 15 points, 20-35 over Bedford. Alex Zanella won the individual title for the Indians in 20 minutes, 42 seconds. Jenna Hollenshead placed third in 21:37, Lacey Beatty was sixth in 22:49 and Taelor Morton was 14th in 24:45.

Southern Fulton's boys placed third out of four complete teams in the meet. J.C. Munson finished fourth in 18:49, Zane Baker was sixth in 19:19 and Brian Stanley was 20th in 21:18.


Shepherd 5, Salem International 0

SALEM, W.Va. -- Jeff Sandusky scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to lead Shepherd University over Salem International on Wednesday afternoon.

Zachary O'Neill had a goal and an assist, Jeffers Frazier and Michael Sprague each had a goal, and Kevin Poland, Feliz Gouanette and Berkeley Springs graduate Matt Martin each added an assist for the Rams (6-10-1, 3-5-1 WVIAC).


W.Va. Wesleyan 5, Shepherd 0

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Lauren Vetock made 11 saves for Shepherd University (4-12-2, 2-6-1) in a West Virginia Conference loss to West Virginia Wesleyan.


County team title at stake

The Washington County Team Championship begins with 36 holes of play Saturday, as teams from Beaver Creek, Fountain Head and Black Rock will compete.

Bernie Deane, playing out of Beaver Creek, is the defending champion. Others playing from Beaver Creek are Denny Stoner and Chris Taylor. Competing from Fountain Head are Chris Bushey, Paul Mellott and Henry Kayes. Teeing it up from Black Rock will be Tracy Piper, Rich Moyer and Jason Fauble.

The event begins at 7:30 a.m. at Beaver Creek with 18 holes. Players will then move over to Fountain Head for a 1 p.m. start.

The final 18 holes will be contested Sunday at Black Rock, beginning at 11 a.m.

Morris gets fourth ace

Elaine Morris used a 4-hybrid to ace the 147-yard 12th hole at Fountain Head Country Club on Wednesday. Morris completed a lifetime quartet of aces on all four par 3s at Fountain Head. Her playing partners were Lois Roulette, Velda Ghattas and Cindy Millsop.

Smith fires hole-in-one

David Smith aced the 135-yard seventh hole at Black Rock on Thursday, using a 7-iron. Stephen Sutton and Joseph Delvecchio were his playing partners.


Greencastle coaching openings
