Trojans advance to state meet

HERSHEY, Pa. -- The Chambersburg girls were the only local team to qualify for next week's PIAA state meet, placing fourth out of 60 schools Wednesday at the District 3 Class AAA championships. Only the top five teams advanced.

For the Trojans on the challenging 3.1-mile course, Maeve Charlesworth was 23rd (21:01), Alayna Merkle was 25th (21:02), Laurie Jones was 37th (21:18), McKenzie Doyle was 56th (21:39) and Haley Jones was 62nd (21:49).

The Chambersburg boys, who finished 11th, had two individual state qualifiers -- Dan Patti (23rd, 17:37) and Nick Rotz (57th, 18:11).

Kyle Phillips qualified for 32nd-place Waynesboro, finishing 36th in 17:53.


Hancock 3, Paw Paw 0

HANCOCK -- Briana Swisher had 10 kills and 10 service points to lead Hancock in a 25-21, 25-22, 25-10 sweep of Paw Paw.

Kelsi Clark had nine assists and and Hannah Creek had four assists for Hancock (4-10).

Everett 3, McConnellsburg 1


EVERETT, Pa. -- A'leese Dickerson had 24 kills, nine digs and four blocks but McConnellsburg lost to Everett, 25-19, 25-18, 15-25, 25-23.

Lisa DeShong had 27 assists and eight digs, Emily Watkins had 17 digs and eight aces, Valerie Green had 15 digs and four aces and Courtney DeShong had nine digs for the Spartans.

JV: McConnellsburg 2-0.


North Hagerstown 20, Boonsboro 14

North: Chris Spann 97 rush yards, 2 TDs; Kyle Hewlett 111 rush yards; Matt Daley 90 pass yards, TD pass; Tyler Shindle TD catch; Shawn Henderson 2 pt. conversion; Anthony Hull 11 tackles.

Boonsboro: Zack Poffenberger TD catch.


North Hagerstown 42, Boonsboro 0

North: J.R. Railing 144 rush yards, 2 TDs; Jared Line TD run; Alijah Benson 68 punt return TD; Matt Toth 10 tackles; Blake Lyles 2 TD passes; Nick Colvin, Jordan Anderson TD catch.


HCC 3, Chesapeake 0

Julia Becker had 18 kills and Sara Micheal added 12 assists for HCC, which swept Chesapeake 25-10, 25-9, 25-11 in the Maryland JuCo Conference.

Ashlyn Rebok had eight assists for the Hawks (28-7, 12-0), while Emma Dalton, Hailee Growden and Rebecca Morgan each added three aces.

West Chester 3, Shepherd 0

WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- Kasey Mercier had 12 kills and 14 digs but Shepherd was swept by West Chester 20-13, 25-16, 25-21, 25-20.

Julie Robertson had 12 digs and Lauren Jeschelnik had 18 assists for the Rams (16-11).


College of Southern Maryland 2, Hagerstown CC 1

BEL AIR, Md. -- Alex Manea scored his 14th goal of the season, but Hagerstown Community College lost to the College of Southern Maryland in the Region XX Division I semifinal.

Brian Kukucka had 15 saves for the Hawks (11-6-2).



FAIRFIELD, Pa. -- Robert Bonebrake Jr., 66, of Hagerstown, recorded a hole-in-one at Mountain View Golf Course.

Bonebrake used a 7-iron to ace the 132-yard, par-3, third hole. He was playing with Carlo Belella, Robert Staup and Jack Grier.
