Mail Call

October 28, 2009

"I would like to thank Mr. Stike, the band director, and the staff of Williamsport High School for canceling the parade in Williamsport due to the rain. I know you all were just thinking of our children, and the way the sickness has been going around, we don't need our children sick. So thanks again. Go, Big Blue." - Williamsport

"What has happened to manners? Six months ago I sent a lovely anniversary gift and still haven't received any recognition, no thank you, no card nothing. I didn't do it for recognition but some kind of acknowledgment would be nice. I think it's really rude for someone not to acknowledge a gift." - Hagerstown

"Hey, the sheriff in Frederick's got it right: Charge inmates to make them smarter. Why make taxpayers pay the bill? Let the inmates pay their own way, work for a little bit of nothing, take it from them, put it back in the system, and it supports itself. Sounds like a plan to me. Least it's better than penalizing hardworking correctional officers." - Hagerstown

"I would like to know when they are going to do something about all these people who walk their dogs and who don't clean up after them. When I walk my dogs I always clean up after them. I have all this dog mess in my yard all the time and it's pretty smelly." - Williamsport

"This is about the health care reform public option. What certain Republicans call socialism, the other countries that have the best medical and health care, they call it civility." - Hagerstown

Please, please, please, how can we get all this junk mail stopped?" - Williamsport

"I was reading in Mail Call about all these cars without their headlights on when it's raining. It's my understanding that this is a Maryland law so cops, fine them." - Greencastle, Pa.

"As I sit here listening to the rain pouring down my heart goes out to all these dogs that are chained and who must live outside. They are surrounded by mud, no room to turn around in their house and how would you know if his roof is leaking. My dogs are in the house dry, warm and happy. Think about it. Dogs deserve better than a life on the end of a chain." - Washington County

"My sympathy is with the family who had the officer shoot their family pet. I wasn't there so I don't know what actually happened but it was too bad that it ended the way it did." - Mercersburg, Pa.

"I wish people would pay more attention to when they park and park too close to the car next to them. And then they get out of their cars after they park too close to another car and (hit) the other car (with their door). I just wish they would pay more attention." - Hagerstown

"I don't know why people are surprised when they read in the papers that America's falling behind in education and technology and so forth. All you have to do is check the colleges - the big colleges, of course, with their football teams and basketball teams. A lot of their players have criminal records. They've been arrested, they've been shot during criminal activities. They just stick them on probation and then let them play college sports." - Hagerstown

"I don't believe that the property owners of Hagerstown all realize that you don't have to be retired and you don't have to be a certain age to get a tax credit. Probably people don't get the paper and they don't read about it. So any age; it's based on your income. They could just call the state assessment office and they will give them forms or explain it a little further." - Hagerstown

"That girl got off lightly. Anyone who plots to kill their parents should be sentenced to life. That girl got off easy, very easy." - Hagerstown

"In Saturday's paper, the article about Maryland Theatre being vandalized, someone said that the vandals spread PVC primer, which stains skin purple and can't be washed off, and that the vandals are going to be walking around with purple hands for quite some time. I find this amusing. Did it ever occur to you that maybe the vandals wore gloves?" - Hagerstown

"OK, are we all finally on the same page? For those holdouts: We need a football coach at Maryland. I can see us getting beat in basketball by Duke, but come on, getting beat by Duke in football? It's Duke. Football? No, I don't think so. Get us a coach, please." - Hagerstown

"I went to see ... 'Where the Wild Things Are' ... and it would have been a most enjoyable evening had some (child) not been allowed to stomp up and down the steps for the whole second half of the movie, while her parents sat there and ignored her. I can't believe the way parents raise their kids these days." - Boonsboro

"I just like to gloat a little bit. I'm so, so happy and proud of my granddaughter. This week she graduated as a warrant officer in Alabama, and after serving two tours in Iraq as a platoon sergeant, she's now an officer, and she's worked real hard to get there, and she's also a graduate of South High. She's been in the service for 10 years, and she's my pride and joy." - Hagerstown
