Comment sought on proposed child-support guidelines

October 27, 2009

BALTIMORE - The Department of Human Resources seeks public comment on the possibility of revising the child support guidelines in Maryland.

Child support amounts have not increased since 1988 and more than 200,000 children in the state currently rely on child support. Proposed changes include updating the child support amounts to reflect the current cost of raising a child and increasing the dollar amount a low-income, noncustodial parent minimally needs for shelter, food, and clothing.

The department will sponsor six regional forums to solicit public comments. The public is welcome to attend any session.

Sessions include:

6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Allegany County Department of Social Services, One Frederick St., Cumberland, Md.

6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at Montgomery College-Rockville Campus, 51 Mannakee St., Theatre Arts Building, Rockville, Md.

The public is invited to attend. Contact Melody Lewis at 410-767-7065 or via e-mail at mlewis2@dhr.state.md.us to confirm your attendance.
