William "Bill" Irwin Dieterich, 85, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 5, 1924, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William V. and E. Pearl Dieterich.

He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946.

Bill was a graduate of Hagerstown High School, class of 1942.

He was employed by the City of Hagerstown, where he retired from the signal department as a superintendent.

He was a member of Salem Reformed Church.

Bill was a member of Antietam Fire Co., South Hagerstown Fire Co., Funkstown Fire Co. and served as captain for 10 years at Pioneer Hook and Ladder Co.


He was a member of AMVETS Post 10, Funks-town American Legion Post 211 and Windy Hollow Hunt Club.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, JoAnna Harriet Kline Dieterich; three sons, William Kyd Dieterich and wife, Marsha, and Robert Black Dieterich and wife, Debbie, all of Hagerstown, and Vinson Stuart Dieterich and wife, Lara, of Hedgesville, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Genevieve Starliper.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Steve Wagoner will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery. Graveside honors provided by the Hagerstown Firefighters Local 1605 honor guard.

The family will receive friends Wednesday at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m.
