Mail Call

October 26, 2009

"It's Thursday, Oct. 22, and I just heard the greatest news. They're gonna take 90 percent of the ... CEOs' salaries, of the companies that accepted the bailouts. I'm just wondering why it took them so long to do this. They should take 100 percent of it."

- Boonsboro

"I bought very expensive oranges from South Africa. To lower food prices, why can't we get Florida oranges, with less shipping expenses?"

- Williamsport

"What is with all this socialist rhetoric and everything? I mean, people, let me explain something to you - Republicans, Democrats, Independents. If Bush wouldn't have got us into Iraq, just think of the trillions of dollars that's been spent there - trillions, not billions, trillions - that could have gone to education and medicine, and things like that. So don't go calling Mr. Obama socialist."

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"I'm reading Thursday's Mail Call, and I'm reading an article that said 'I'm a Maryland state employee,' and down at the bottom it says 'Falling Waters, W.Va.' I have a hard time dealing with people that are employed by the State of Maryland living in West Virginia, spending their taxes in West Virginia and taking the state's money. Years ago, if you were employed by the State of Maryland, you had to live within so many miles of the city and be living in Maryland."

"To the Falling Waters writer who is unhappy with reduced working hours at Maryland prisons: First of all, you people endorsed O'Malley, and now we all suffer. You are paid by the taxpayers of Maryland, but you pay your taxes to West Virginia. Your tax money does not go into the Maryland treasury. It leaves the state of Maryland. Do you not see a problem with that?"

- Hagerstown

"Sadly, I just heard on the news that they found little 7-year-old Somer's body in a landfill in Georgia. There were (161) registered sex offenders just around her home in Orange Park, Fla. In Asian (countries), fingers and hands are cut off for stealing, and there is little theft. ... We need much stronger sentences to stop these heinous crimes against our innocent children."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I didn't go to college. Instead, I learned a skill. Employed ever since."

- Clear Spring

"Only weeks before Christmas, and all through the year, not a 'How are you?' or 'Thank you' from you did we hear. It's the season for giving, we know, but some appreciation from you, you must show. We love you, and therefore we give one more time. Being ignored will bring you no future dime. Merry Christmas with love."

- Your grandparents, Williamsport

"So far I could only find one thing that I could give Obama any credit for, and that is keeping the oil prices down. Now I can't even do that, as they are skyrocketing, and all he can do is pick on Fox News and others who oppose his spending projects. Is there anyone out there that believes in his change?"

- Hagerstown

"We go to the main office of the Hagerstown, Md., post office almost every day and noticed that recently only one person is working the counter. Lines have been out the door, and as many as 20 people waiting until long after closing time of 5 p.m. Keeping in mind the stimulus package, Cash for Clunkers, and now the post office, do we really want our government running our health care?"

- Hagerstown

"I was sitting here thinking about the judges in this country and how many times they have made children go home with a parent that is a druggie and an alcoholic, and how many of those children end up being abused and afraid to tell anyone about it - and then go on in the wrong direction themselves. Do these judges really care what's best for these children? I wonder."

- Clear Spring

"I am not a teacher, I'm not a school administrator, I'm just a citizen like most of you. When I read about parents filing an appeal about the BOE decision to build Eastern Primary, I'm amused. These parents seem more interested in where their kids go to school than the education that they are receiving."

- Halfway

"I would love to adopt a dog, but I cannot afford the cost of veterinarian care. I hear so many people talk about the high cost of veterinary care for their pets. It costs me more to take my cat to my vet than it does for me to go to my own doctor. The reason people cannot adopt a pet is because of what vets charge. So they are euthanized instead. Come on, veterinarians."

- Clear Spring

"You know, maybe we wouldn't have the ugliest men in Hagerstown, of the country, if we would stop making (it) home for all the men that are living here from out of jail. There's nobody running around the streets but them. Clean up the streets before you start worrying about the men being so ugly."

- Hagerstown

"Hagerstown hit rock bottom on the ugly men thing. Could it be because all my smart friends and I moved out because of your council's thinking? Or the state as a whole in its thinking? He he he."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.
