Additional organizations that provide help to pregnant women

Birthright of Washington County is closing next week.

Here are some other organizations that provide similar services:

o Hagerstown Area Pregnancy Center, 109 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown. Offers free pregnancy tests and pregnancy confirmations, via ultrasound. Hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and on Friday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays. Medical staff is available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. o Washington County Health Department's Reproductive Health Services Clinic provides free pregnancy testing. The clinic, at 1302 Pennsylvania Ave. in Hagerstown, is open from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. You do not have to live in Washington County to receive free pregnancy testing, said Rod MacRae, health department spokesman.

Washington County residents can also meet with a nurse and receive information about medical assistance, pregnancy and prenatal care, said Susan Parks, director of nursing.

o The Washington County Health Department's Healthy Families program helps first-time mothers who live in the county, said Program Manager Tracy Soffe.

Moms receive a home visit, help learning about other relevant agencies, and education about child development and bonding with their babies. The program includes interactive parent-child activities and a parenting group.

o The Parent-Child Center provides free clothing, diapers, formula and baby furniture -- when available -- to anyone that needs it, Executive Director Millie Lowman said.

"Whatever people give us, then we give it away," Lowman said.

The center, at 998 Potomac Ave. in Hagerstown, is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday.
