SHARPSBURG - William Loren Riffle, 67, of 6042 Lockhouse Drive in Sharpsburg, Md., passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at his home.

Born Monday, April 20, 1942, in Weston, W.Va., he was the son of the late Forrest Riffle and Leota Barker Riffle.

He graduated from Laurel High School in 1960 and later graduated from the University of Maryland in 1977. He received his master's degree from American University in 1979.


He was employed by the U.S. Department of Energy and also NASA, where he received two presidential citations for his work on the Apollo lunar landing projects.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sandra Marie Riffle; two daughters, Amy Ann Riffle-Kouyeas of Bedford, Pa., and Jill Marie Morrison of Zullinger, Pa.; one son, John Matthew Riffle of Zullinger; one sister, Sharon Thorpe of Mount Jackson, Va.; two brothers, James Riffle of Clarksville, Md., and Robert Riffle of Laurel, Md.; and five grandchildren, Sierra Willard, Tristan Willard, Jeremy Forrest, Devin Forrest and Matthew Riffle.

Services will be Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1253 Mount Aetna Road, Hagerstown, Md., with Bishop Greg Harman officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Oct. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.
