Fort Ritchie Community Center

CASCADE - The Fort Ritchie Community Center recently achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, becoming the first LEED-certified public building in Washington County at any level.

The Gold certification was awarded after the center reached a stringent set of performance goals and earned a required number of points on a complex rating system. The rating system covers five environmental categories - sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Local companies that worked on the center are BMGM Architects, Frederick Seibert & Associates and Callas Contractors, all of Hagerstown. The Corporate Office Properties Trust (COPT) interior design team was responsible for interior finishes and furniture, and Sustainable Design Consulting of Washington, D.C., guided the team through the process of achieving Gold certification.

The center is a 21,000-square-foot multiuse facility on the Fort Ritchie development that opened in September 2008.
