Senior striker Joey Barvir scored three second-half goals and Smithsburg's boys soccer team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to pull off a a major upset, beating North Hagerstown 3-2 on Thursday night in an MVAL Antietam game at Mike Callas Stadium.

The Leopards (2-12, 2-5) kept the Hubs (9-4, 5-1) from clinching the Antietam title.

"When we were down 2-0, I knew that when I got the ball that I had to do something with it," Barvir said. "I give thanks to my teammates, because all three of my goals were assisted. We never let our heads down. For 80 minutes tonight, we played with pride. It was from the moment that we suited up to the moment that we left the field."

Barvir's hat trick gives him nine goals on the season. His game-winner came in the 78th minute.

"We took advantage of our opportunities and we got three goals," Smithsburg coach Gerry Johnson said. "On that last shot, we got a great (pass) and a great head shot. Joey was in the right spot and he was very opportunistic.

"When we were down 2-0, I was telling my players to keep their heads up and to keep playing good. Our first goal was a confidence booster for us. After our second goal, it was just a matter of what was going to happen next for us. ... When you keep putting pressure on the goal, sooner or later, it is going to go in."

Senior keeper Dan Hallman made 14 saves for the Leopards.

"I just did what I could do," Hallman said. "I just let my defense play. They really did a good job and they didn't let too many balls through. That was the best game that we have played all season from the beginning to the end. From the first whistle, everybody played their hearts out. We left it all out there on the field."

Yusif Kadir assisted the first goal, Alex Brown assisted the second and Nathan Pryor assisted the third for the Leopards. The first two goals came on through balls that beat the Hubs' back line.

North got on the board first in the 43rd minute when Max Psillas scored on an assist by Nelson Moreno. The Hubs extended their lead to 2-0 when Frederick Owusu-Ayim scored on an assist by Dominique Phillips.

JV: North Hagerstown, 10-0.
