Army Pvt. Matthew S. Stevens, son of Lorie Tedrick of Hagerstown, graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

Stevens is a 2007 graduate of Smithsburg High School.

Air Force Maj. Preston R. Wallech, son of Miller and Esther Wallech of Hagerstown, has arrived for duty at Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark.

Wallech, a flight commander with 16 years of military service, is assigned to the 19th Airlift Wing.

Wallech graduated from North Hagerstown High School, attended Hagerstown Community College and then joined the Air Force and completed his bachelor's degree through the University of Maryland.

As a captain, he served a year in the Middle East and on his return in June to Orlando, Fla., was promoted to major. After promotion, he was transferred to Little Rock. He then received a master's of science degree in international relations from Troy University in Alabama.


Wallech is married to the former Pattama Hanwisa of Bangkok, Thailand. They have two children.

Scott Dickinson Marks of Waynesboro, Pa., son of Dick and Penny Marks of Zullinger, Pa., was promoted to chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy on Sept. 11. The ceremony was held at the U.S. naval facility in Virginia Beach, Va., where Marks is assigned to the Naval Special Warfare Development Group.

Marks is a 1988 graduate of Waynesboro High School.

He and his wife Darlene have a 6-year-old daughter, Isabella.

Also in attendance were Marks' parents and his brothers, Lee and Chris.

Army Pvt. Dominique S. Mitchell, son of Katina Fairfax of Hagerstown, and Mark Singleton of Williamsport, Pa., graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Mitchell is a 2009 graduate of the Keystone Job Corps Center, Drums, Pa.

Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Mark A. Wiley, son of Dorothy A. Cooper and Robert F. Wiley, both of Hagerstown, has deployed to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and/or Operation Enduring Freedom.

Wiley, a U.S. Air Force Central Command aircrew flight equipment superintendent with 19 years of military service, is assigned to the 6th Operations Support Squadron at MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Fla.

Wiley graduated in 1989 from North Hagerstown High School, and received an associate degree in 2005 from the Community College of the Air Force.
