RANSON, W.Va. - Thomas Arnold Pierce, 92, of Ranson, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born July 11, 1917, he was the son of the late Edgar Lee Pierce and the late Charlotte A. (Wise) Pierce.

Mr. Pierce served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He retired after 30 years with U.S. Steel Co. After retiring, he was a very helpful handyman for his friends.

He was a member of Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town, W.Va., and a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 948 of Charles Town.


He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Clara E. (Longerbeam) Pierce; one brother, Mel Pierce of Charles Town; one grandson, Faron Burcker and wife, Ginger, of Moyock, N.C.; a very special adopted granddaughter, Jennifer Kastle; four great-grandchildren, Holly Burcker, Gracie Burcker, Ellie Burcker and Connor Burcker; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Kay Burcker; three sisters, Evelyn Shirley, Ruth Dalgarn and Kathleen Sullivan; and two brothers, Jim Pierce and Arthur "Ollie" Pierce.

Services will be Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. Melanie McCarley will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
