Mail Call

October 21, 2009

"I just have a question, and that pertains to this notice in the mail that I got about the H1N1 influenza. This came from the health department, the county administrator's office, and the superintendent of Washington County Public Schools. Now, instead of sending all this mail out, at who knows what expense, not to mention the cost of the paper and of course, the green state of Maryland, but why wouldn't this go through the local radio stations and the local media, to make this announcement, this information?" - Hagerstown

"Could someone please repaint the lines on West Franklin Street for parking, so my neighbors quit hogging up two parking places?" - Hagerstown

"To the lady who criticized the school lunch: I have worked 15 to 20 years. ... Go in, see, eat with your children. See what they are eating. I'm telling you, they get meat, vegetables, fruit, and it's not frozen. When I worked there, we did 18 turkeys, whole turkeys. So don't criticize the food. Go eat with your children. Why your children are overweight is what you're feeding them from home." - Hagerstown

"You people out there holler about health care - read Sunday's front page and you'll see how you can get your health care for nothing. Have a good day." - San Mar

"A lot of people today are very much alike. They act alike in a lot of their ways and actions. I mean, for example, all a lot of people seem to want to do today is go around complaining and going around smoking, smoking and drinking. And then they have the nerve to judge other people such as me and all, whenever they should look at themselves before they start judging a person like me." - Greencastle, Pa.

"Well, here it is, Monday morning, 7:35 a.m. in Mount Lena and I'm sitting near Greenbrier school, and there comes this white Mustang, about 70 mph, racing like a crazy person ... right past Greenbrier school and the little children being let off. Someone should come see about this." - Mount Lena

"I'm just reading about the gentleman who called in about God and the Bible, that he's not the smartest guy in the world. Maybe God and Jesus didn't write what was in the Bible, but it's things that's quoted from them." - Falling Waters, W.Va.

"Just reading the morning paper on Oct. 19, and I'm reading 'Why are we in Afghanistan?' Why are we there? I've never figured out why. Bush had to send the troops over, but why did he send them to Afghanistan? Our boys are getting killed needlessly. They don't want us; it's a different country, a different way of life. Can't we stay at home and protect America without telling everybody in the world how to live?" - Hagerstown

"I find it extremely ironic that one of the signs on the square Saturday read 'Give me back my country.' It's what the Iraqis have been saying for the last seven years or so, and are still saying: 'Give me back my country.' Where were you when we invaded that sovereign nation?" - Hagerstown

"I'm in Hancock, Md., right now, and this is on the state spending money. Of course, the city and the county spend money. Like I say, I'm in Hancock, and there's five state workers up here putting a sign up. Now you talk about misspending taxpayers' money, got five people in Hancock working for the state, hanging signs. Of course, the city and county of Hagerstown don't do much better, either." - Hagerstown

"I would like to thank the agriculture marketing specialist of Washington County for organizing the 'Farms, Fun and Food' bus trip on Oct. 17. Even though the weather was dreary, the local farms that we visited were welcoming and warm. The presentations on all five farms were awesome and inspiring. The gourmet meal that concluded the trip was excellent. The actual meal consisted of foods prepared from the very farms we visited. Remember, no farms, no food." - Hagerstown

"As you all know, we had a horrible weekend, with all the rain. All weekend long it was cold and rainy. And I noticed as I was driving out on Route 70, and even in some of the city streets, there were so many people still driving without their headlights on. A lot of these cars were gray and darker-colored cars. You couldn't even see them. If the Maryland state (government) wants to take care of its deficit, all they have to do is put up some cameras and take pictures of all these people that don't have their lights on. Then Maryland can send them a $25 fine for each one of them. That'll take care of Maryland's deficit." - Williamsport

"I'm just calling in reference to health care for all Americans. We need to get health care passed for this country, and there needs to be a health care bill that satisfies all Americans. And what's going on in Wall Street is just ridiculous. Our poor senior citizens are not going to get a cost-of-living increase this year, and we're the ones that bailed out Wall Street and they're paying out these ridiculous - we've lost total control in D.C., and we've got to regain it." - Hagerstown

"Why can't we seniors understand the reason for there being no increase in Social Security benefits next year? Simple reason: The cost of living has not increased. As a kid, I remember that people who were truly in need would do most anything to avoid taking money from the government. Now, most everyone wants a handout." - Hagerstown

"To Berkeley Springs in the Thursday Mail Call: To quote him, 'I am a true American,' and he says he is glad Chicago didn't get the Olympics and is glad to see President Obama fail. If he calls this being a true American, I'm wondering what I and most of the people I know are." - Greencastle, Pa.

"Where are all the people concerned about Afghanistan? Something stinks over there, and people are dying trying to help a corrupt government that reminds me of Vietnam's many governments. Remember how that war ended? Tell your congressman that you don't like it." - Waynesboro, Pa.
