Mail Call

October 20, 2009

"Since Social Security, we won't be getting any raises, well, every year that I did get a raise, the premium for my supplemental insurance went up. So now maybe my premium won't go up."

- Hagerstown

"My pet peeve is not havin' my school bus stop at an abandoned track and then seein' a big-ol' locomotive come roarin' 'round the bend."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"Seriously, where is the Costco for Hagerstown?"

- Hagerstown

"Concerning a comment that was called in concerning the workplace HR, I would like to say that I don't have anything against anyone in the workplace and all where I work at and all. It's just that I feel that the supervisors and management shouldn't let certain people run the whole department."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I got a question for all these couples out here. If you fight every day, what's the point to even stay together? I don't understand it. That's like the couple across the hall from me in my apartment building. All they do is fight all the time. If you're with somebody and you fight every day, like I said, what is the point to even stay together?"

"I'm reading the article in Friday's paper concerning the town of Hancock contemplating getting private inspectors to do work, instead of using Washington County inspectors. And Mr. DiVito of the county says that he would hate to see that happen, but I must tell you, after doing building in Maryland and now doing a building in Pennsylvania, where they do use private inspectors, I would go with private inspectors any day. So I hope Hancock will instill the private inspector scenario they're contemplating."

- Mercersburg, Pa.

"I'm a Blue Band alumni, and I was very disappointed that the band did not have a drumline cadence for the Showcase of Bands on Tuesday night."

- Williamsport

"County Commissioners' stimulus package, for who? For out-of-state contractors?"

- Hagerstown

"I see we've gotten in our annual rights and responsibilities as customers of City Light booklet - purple this year. Also, nobody had the strength of character to sign this little piece of nonsense, where it does not state anywhere that everybody living in the City of Hagerstown is stuck with City Light, like it or not, and where we customers are treated like serfs of the kingdom."

- Hagerstown

"I'm reading the Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down, and it makes my heart warm and feel good to know about this little Taylor Morgan, fourth-grader at Emma K. Doub Elementary School who finished one second behind Boonsboro Elementary School's Camryn Harper in the girls race, and she helped her to get back on course and even get a head over so she could have a fair chance. ... I would like to see them get her an award ... because she deserves it. God bless her. She's gonna grow up to be a wonderful lady."

- Hagerstown

"I was reading here again about the Maryland lawmakers and the death penalty. I cannot understand there is so much sympathy for killers, people who kill people. They don't care about the people they kill, so why should we worry about them? The Bible says 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth,' and I think it's time to start using the death penalty."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"This is to the person in Clear Spring that's writing to Mail Call about me hitting their car. I'll never confess, and you can't stop me."

- Hagerstown

"What is wrong with our government? Gonna bring over 30,000 refugees - (don't) we have enough foreigners over here to support? Is our government losing (its) mind? If we have a war, we'll lose."

- Hagerstown

"I would like to know the difference between the Senate, Congress and the White House and a stink bug. God bless America."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in concerning the health care. I hear some out there say that we need to change it. My question is, to our president, is why is he trying to change the whole health care system when around 75 percent of American people are satisfied with their health care? Why not provide it for the ones that don't have it that want to purchase it, and not pay for it out of our tax money - or are they trying to control our whole health care? Let's think and see where they're coming from."

- Boonsboro

"I'm calling about the comment about the ugly men. I don't think Hagerstown has ugly men. I think that it's hard for single women to find a nice man around here, in general. People seem to be a little bit superficial when it comes to meeting the opposite sex, and I think they need to start looking at women that are of different height and weight, instead of just for a model. But in general, the men in Hagerstown - it's just hard to find people, and I think people need to look outside - look inside the person rather than on the outside."

- Hagerstown

"Could you please tell me, with all the shootings that's going on in this town ... taxpayer dollars is being spent with just police officers sitting all over this town in 25-, 35-mph speed traps? Can't we use them for better, for a better use than just setting up speed traps?"

- Hagerstown

"This is to all you protesters out there. Do you even know what you're protesting about, or are you just blindly following somebody telling you, hey, you should do it? You don't want government-run health care. Listen to me: Does that mean that you want to get rid of the VA and Social Security and Medicare? Is that what you're talking about, you want to get rid of that, too? Do you want to get rid of the VA that helps the veterans with all the traumatic injuries?"

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"This refers to the page one article in the Saturday, Oct. 17, Herald-Mail. An officer shot a black Lab because it 'became aggressive.' ... Labs will bark, especially if the person has a hat, but will almost always quickly make up. Please train these folks to be patient with dogs."
