October 20, 2009|By DAN DEARTH

M.S. Johnston Co. of Hagerstown will provide kitchen equipment for Eastern Primary School, which is slated to open on the east end of Hagerstown in August 2011.

On Tuesday, the Washington County Board of Education voted 6-1 to accept M.S. Johnston's $205,529 bid. Board member Donna Brightman cast the dissenting vote, saying after the meeting that she wanted to remain consistent in her opposition to the school.

Eastern Primary School is being built to help alleviate overcrowding at several elementary schools across the county.

Dozens of parents spoke against the school at public forums last month. Among other things, they said the proposed site of the school, which is near the intersection of Yale Drive and Mount Aetna Road, was in the wrong place.

In other news, the board voted 7-0 to award the following contracts:

o $98,328 to MTS Equipment of Winchester, Va., and $17,310 to Harwill Food Service, also of Winchester, to replace outdated kitchen equipment at Williamsport High School, E. Russell Hicks Middle School, Boonsboro Middle School, Northern Middle School and Smithsburg High School
