Guard sponsoring discount grocery sale at armory

October 20, 2009

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Military families may purchase discounted groceries Saturday and Sunday during a sale sponsored by the West Virginia National Guard.

The sale will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Martinsburg National Guard armory, at 2096 Kelly Island Road in Martinsburg near the 167th Airlift Wing's base. The armory is the home of West Virginia's 157th Military Police Co.

The sale will feature fresh meat and produce, household cleaning and personal-care items, canned goods, snacks, pet food, water and sports drinks, and a variety of nonperishable goods.

Commissary officials said extra values will be realized through items sold by the case or in bulk packages. Shoppers will be able to save extra money by using manufacturers' coupons available on-site.

A similar commissary event was held at the 167th Airlift Wing in July, when shoppers saved 40 percent to 60 percent on some items. More than 800 shoppers spent an estimated $60,000 at that sale.

Current and retired service members from any branch of service who have a valid Department of Defense military identification card are eligible to shop at the sale. Military dependents with a valid military dependent identification card may shop without their sponsor.

Cash, checks, debit cards and major credit cards will be accepted.

National Guard officials have partnered with the Defense Commissary Agency to bring the commissary sale program to military installations around the state. Military commissaries provide groceries to service members, retirees and their families at an average savings of more than 30 percent off commercial prices.

To date, nearly 3,000 military families have benefited from seven other sales held around the state.

Future sales are planned for Nov. 7 and 8 at the Eleanor National Guard Armory in Putnam County, W.Va., and the Army Aviation Support Facility in Wheeling, W.Va.
