Rams' Steele shows mettle with honor

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University return man Deante Steele tied an NCAA career record Saturday to earn WVIAC special teams player of the week for third time this season.

Steele ran back his 10th career kick return for a touchdown in the Rams' 31-30 loss to West Liberty. The 86-yard kickoff return equaled the conference and NCAA Division II record, held by three other players, including former Shepherd star James Rooths. He also had nine tackles and two pass breakups as a defensive back.

Mid Penn Championships

BIG SPRING, Pa. -- Chambersburg placed three girls in the top 10 and Dan Pattie finished 13th to pace the Trojans to top team finishes in the Mid Penn Championships on Saturday.

McKenzie Doyle finished fourth with Maeve Charlesworth taking seventh and Alayna Merkle was ninth as Chambersburg had 62 points to finish a close second to Cumberland Valley for the girls team title. Cumberland Valley scored 58 points, paced by individual champion Leigha Anderson's winning time of 20:18 over the 5K course.

Patti ran a 17:45 to finish 13th and lead Chambersburg to a third-place finish with 135 points. Cumberland Valley won the title with 65 points.
