Mail Call

October 19, 2009

"I wanted to call and thank the Lincolnshire PTA for a wonderful fall fest evening at the school. The crafts were really cute. My kids enjoyed making the spider pumpkins and stuffing their first scarecrow. It was really fun watching the kids' relay game, and they wrapped the principal and the vice principal up like mummies. It was a great family fun fight." - Washington County

"I want to comment on the high school football game at Williamsport, between Boonsboro and Williamsport. There were two instances with sets of parents. The first, one parent was yelling at the chain crew at halftime, threatening to meet them in the parking lot after the game. In the second, the parent, a different parent, was yelling at the referees. ... It's just a shame ... parents have to act so unruly." -Boonsboro

"The Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 simply required that banks cannot discriminate against a loan applicant because the house is in a 'poor' neighborhood. ... The mortgage crisis which precipitated the recent financial meltdown was caused by banks making bad loans to rich folks who could not really afford the McMansions they wanted." - Chambersburg, Pa.

"This is for the Williamsport-area powers that be that decided Oct. 30 is trick-or-treat night. Did anyone check a calendar and see there's a home football game that night? Come on, make trick-or-treat the 29th, so we can do both." -Williamsport

"I'm reading Thursday, Oct. 15's paper about a person from Keedysville put in there about urinalysis tests ... for a job. I agree with this person that anybody that's getting, receiving benefits from the government ... they should have to take (a uninalysis test) because there's a lot of people who get benefits that need them, but there's also a lot of people ... that's on drugs that don't need this." - Hagerstown

"In today's paper I read a comment from a reader where she had some surgery at Washington County Hospital, and she was saying how wonderful it was. I'd also like to agree with her. On Oct. 5, I had surgery there on my back, in the same-day surgery on the third floor. I was kind of apprehensive at first because I had heard some stuff, and I had even considered another hospital. I was very impressed by the courtesy and professionalism." - Mercersburg, Pa.

"If this health plan proposed by Obama is so great, how come the president and Congress are exempt from it?" - Hancock

"I'd like to say 'Absolutely, yes' to the guy from Keedysville that says welfare recipients, people that receive all those benefits, they should have to pay for urinalysis, too. If we have to go to work and pay our taxes for them to ... earn the money for them to use, then yes, they should have to pass a urinalysis, too." - Williamsport

"To the person that says that everybody in Washington County, their property tax is going up, that Funkstown is, expects theirs to go down. That's because it's a well-run town. We still have to pay the high Washington County property taxes, just like everybody else. Got it?" - Funkstown

"I was just setting here reading Mail Call. I'm getting sick and tired of hearing about the illegals. At least they work and pay taxes. That's more than the bunches that they're bringing in out of Virginia, from other countries that don't have to pay." - Maugansville

"I see someone called in the other day, something about the word of God and the Bible. I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but I know that God or Jesus never wrote anything that's in the Bible." - Hagerstown

"My wife works in Hagerstown and we do a lot of business in Hagerstown. I'm calling in reference to the call from Smithsburg about the wheelchairs on Dual Highway. I almost hit somebody in a wheelchair on Dual Highway the other day, this week. I do not feel it is safe for the wheelchairs to be on Dual Highway. It's not really safe for pedestrians, let alone wheelchairs. The individual I almost hit was riding up the middle of the turning lane." - McConnellsburg, Pa.

"You know, I was reading Mail Call this morning on Friday morning, reading in Mail Call all these right-wingers complaining about Barack Obama, our president, getting the Nobel Peace Prize. Well, if they're that jealous, though, tell them not to worry, because Bush is gonna get an award, too. He's gonna get that shoe that was thrown at his head for an award." - Hagerstown

"It is incomprehensible to me that an American can be so sick that they wish our president - and by implication, our country - to fail, as has been indicated in Mail Call in the past." - Hagerstown

"A Confederate $3 bill, if genuine, would be worth a lot of money because it would be the only one known to exist." - Keedysville

"I was calling since I noticed that Leonard Pitts' opinion of the Peace Prize is you only need to have a vision. So we are now awarding peace prizes, the Nobel Peace Prize, for people that have visions of a better America. You don't have to do anything now. ... Nobel Peace Prizes are now given for visions." - Hagerstown

"I'm calling in about the retired Navy veteran. ... I have a daughter who has been in the Navy for over 25 years. She is a lieutenant commander. She has served on numerous ships. She has done shore duty, she has done overseas duty. She has fought in wars. What's wrong with her being on a submarine? She's as good a Navy personnel as any man is." - Hancock

"Well, some more of our soldiers have been killed, and I still can't figure out how this president of ours got the Nobel Peace Prize. Evidently the people that voted for him and the people that support it and think it's great never had anyone in the military, never lost anyone in a war. It is just totally ridiculous, and it shows how out of control this country is, and what's going on." - Hagerstown
