Mail Call

October 17, 2009

"You know, the seniors aren't gonna get their cost of living raise in January on their Social Security, so Obama wants to give them a $250 check to make up for it, but it's got to go through Congress. And it's buried in (The Herald-Mail) paper. Why it wasn't on front page, I don't know, but I think it should have been, and I don't know why, but - he's looking out for the older people."

- Hagerstown

"I realize I can't expect for people to pave a berm on all the roads in the state we live, but I think they should pave a berm on the side of the road that's really heavy traveling and all, I mean, for bicyclists, especially the road - the Greencastle Pike road. This road, Greencastle Pike road, leading to (U.S.) 40, there's no berm at all for bicyclists."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I'm very happy for the elementary schools who received the free kitchen equipment; however, it wasn't free. It was stimulus money. It was paid for by taxpayers all over this country. How many jobs did it create? That's what I want to know."

"This is for the person in Mail Call that was talking about dropping the kitten off and putting the person down for it. Well, that's why people do that, because the person that got it went and fed it and gave it a warm home and everything. So that's why people drop them off along the road like that. At least that's better than taking them to the SPCA and them killing them."

"Devil's Backbone Park was named this because of the crookedness of the road. Like the devil himself, it is very crooked. It curls around like a snake. (Md.) 68 has taken many lives and caused many accidents over the years."

- Boonsboro

"I'm calling about the person who said Obama should not listen to the generals. Generals do not sell insurance; they fight wars to keep us safe."

- Hagerstown

"Somebody explain this to me, will you? Inflation is supposed to be down, but yet we're not gonna get a COLA this year for the senior citizens this coming year, but yet 930,000 homes are being foreclosed on, food prices are still going up, utilities are going up, yet inflation's down? Oh, I forgot - don't make sense to me. All that money spending mailing out $250 when they could just give us a COLA increase. Tell me about it, folks. Is this nuts or not?"

- Hancock

"I pay $1,156 for Medicare and $3,200 for other insurance - a total of $4,356. I have a cheaper plan, with no eye, dental or lab covered. That couple that pays $4,680 a year for two people is not as bad as mine, just one person. We need health care to lower their premiums. I think all congressmen's names that receive ... care should be published, to be made public."

- Williamsport

"I have been watching 'The Price is Right' for about 20 years now, and this past year has been ridiculous. I am wondering if they are told to act stupid, or if that's just the natural way they do it."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in regards to all the junk in the mail that we keep getting. It's no wonder the post office is overloaded. I've received in the last two days 20 requests for donations to various organizations. I've given over the year to 47, but it seems like there's an awful lot of money wasted on mailings."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to comment on drivers that do not use their turn signals when turning left or right or when it is raining, they don't turn on their lights and their windshield wipers, and people downtown that don't cross at the corners. They run right in front of your vehicle, and I think, you know, that's what the double white lines are for, right?"

- Hagerstown

"Someone wanted to know in Thursday, Oct. 15's paper why Devil's Backbone Park is called Devil's Backbone Park. I think it's a great name. The road that it is on that runs from (U.S.) 40 at Boonsboro to (Md.) 65 is Devil's Backbone Road, and if you've ever driven it, you know why it's called Devil's Backbone Road. Have a nice rainy day."

- Funkstown

"I'm calling about the gnats. They could be fruit flies, or maybe your house is still dirty."

- Washington County

"I think our BOE needs to make the school lunch menus more nutritious for the kids. The article for Tuesday, in the day care, they're trying to fight obesity, and they're giving the kids healthier lunches. Did you ever see what the kids have to eat? No wonder why our nation's children are overweight. And the other thing is, people with the flu going around need to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze."
