Blood drive

A blood drive will be held at the Ruritan Club Monday from 2 to 7 p.m.

At the Ruritan's Aug. 17 blood drive, local resident Dave Keener reached a milestone by giving his 25th gallon of blood. Very few people reach this level of donation and the Maugansville Ruritan and the Red Cross would like to thank Dave for his dedication to helping save lives.

Baked goods, jewelry and collectibles will be available for purchase. Apple dumplings will be sold for $2.75 each and country ham sandwiches for $3 apiece. Quarts and pints of vegetable beef, chicken corn, and ham and bean soups will be sold for $2.50 a pint or $5 a quart. The soups also may be ordered by calling the club at 301-739-0870 by Oct. 19. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tickets for a turkey dinner raffle will be sold or can be obtained by calling the club.

Steve Chamos celebrated his 68th birthday Oct. 7.

Michael Cline will be celebrating his 21st birthday Oct. 17.

Miss Penny's Porch

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln penny. To celebrate the milestone, the Maugansville Historical Society will hold a penny drive with the hopes of collecting enough pennies to purchase a gazebo named Miss Penny's Porch.

The gazebo would be placed in Ruritan Park within walking distance of the Maugansville Creamery. The historical society thanks the Maugansville Ruritan for its generosity in donating the land.

Pennies may be dropped off at the Tower Bank branch on Maugans Avenue, Maugansville Elementary School or in the Miss Penny's Porch jars at various businesses around Maugansville. The historical society hopes to collect enough pennies to have the gazebo in place by Pride Day 2010.

By each of us pitching in a little bit, Miss Penny's Porch will be a reminder of Abraham Lincoln's devotion to our country and our devotion to our community.
