Bell set for induction into Bobcat Hall of Fame

FROSTBURG, Md. -- Ariel Bell, a 1990 North Hagerstown High School graduate, will be one of five former Frostburg State University athletes inducted into the Bobcat Athletics Hall of Fame this evening during the school's annual dinner and induction ceremony.

The inductees will also be recognized at halftime of the Homecoming football game against Ithaca on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Bell, a 1995 Frostburg State graduate, was one of the top kick-return specialists to play for the football program in its 47-year history.

Bell, a four-year starter, was a First Team All-American as a senior. That year, he led the team in receiving yards (772), yards per reception (21.4), punt returns (20) and yards per return (17.3). Bell scored seven touchdowns on the season, including two punt returns of 70 and 56 yards. His 17.3 yards per punt return also led the NCAA that year.

The Bobcats went a combined 18-4-1 over Bell's final two seasons.

SMITHSBURG -- Sara Rishell had 14 kills and five blocks to lead Smithsburg, which remained undefeated with a 25-9, 25-17, 25-22 sweep of MVAL Antietam opponent Catoctin.

Katie Sprecher had 11 kills, Colleen Black added eight kills and Danielle Beaver had 15 digs for the Leopards (11-0, 6-0).

Heritage 3, Grace 1

Kara Stamper paced Heritage Academy with 15 blocks and 15 kills as the Eagles defeated Grace Academy 25-19, 21-25, 25-13, 25-16 in a Mason Dixon Christian Conference battle.

Callie Butts tallied 30 assists and five aces for Heritage (13-3, 12-2), while Jessica Gaylor had 17 service points and Rachel Clarke recorded four blocks.

Clear Spring 3, North 0

CLEAR SPRING -- Lindsay Lacy had 15 kills to lead Clear Spring in a 25-16, 25-17, 25-13 MVAL Antietam win over North Hagerstown (9-2, 4-2).

Lily Pinkham had 13 kills and three blocks, Damara McDonough had 17 service points and four aces, Megan Micco had 30 assists and 13 digs, Sarah Elwood had 15 digs and Hannah House had eight kills and three blocks for the Blazers (8-2, 5-1).

JV: North, 2-0.

South 3, Brunswick 0

BRUNSWICK, Md. -- Megan Vance had 20 assists and 11 service points to lead South Hagerstown in a 25-10, 25-15, 25-13 MVAL Antietam sweep of Brunswick (1-10, 0-6).

Kara Henson had 11 service points, Rebecca Pearl had 11 service points and 10 kills and Morgan McCoy had six service points and four kills for the Rebels (6-5, 3-3).

JV: Brunswick, 2-0.

Greencastle 3, West Perry 0

GREENCASTLE, Pa. -- Erin Garns had 23 assists and two aces as Greencastle-Antrim swept West Perry, 25-10, 25-12, 25-12.

Jenny Fisher had 14 digs, Lauren Verhoef had five kills, Sammi Rudy had four kills and four aces and Kelsey Gearhart had eight kills and three aces for the Blue Devils.

JV: Greencastle, 2-0.

Mercersburg 3, Highland School 1

MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- Abby Schwing had 23 assists, eight service points and five digs as Mercersburg Academy beat Highland School.

Sarah Kolanowski had 19 kills, seven digs, two blocks, three assists, six service points and four aces, Melody Gomez had four kills, five digs and eight service points, Brookke Mahaffey had eight digs, four kills and 11 service points, Kendra Cubit had seven service points and two kills and Paige Pak had seven digs and seven service points for the Blue Storm.

Gettysburg 3, Waynesboro 1

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Molly Geiger had eight kills for Waynesboro in the 25-15, 25-12, 23-25, 25-20 loss.

Marlee Beckner had 10 digs, Amber Martz had eight blocks and Delaney Blubaugh had 33 assists for the Maidens (5-9).

Tussey Mountain 3, Southern Fulton 2

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. -- Alexis Knisely had 12 kills for Southern Fulton in a 22-25, 14-25, 25-16, 25-17, 18-16 loss to Tussey Mountain.

Brittany Strait had 14 service points, Kristen Miller had 13 service points, Rachel Norris had 11 digs, Cierra Covalt had seven assists and Jenna Ritz had six assists for the Indians (2-12).

McConnellsburg 3, Northern Bedford 2

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. -- A'leese Dickerson had 25 kills and 11 digs as McConnellsburg beat Northern Bedford, 24-26, 25-22, 18-25, 25-18, 15-11.

Lisa DeShong had 37 assists and 15 digs, Emily Watkins had 13 kills and 14 digs and Valerie Green had 12 digs for the Spartans.

JV: McConnellsburg, 2-0.


McConnellsburg 7, Everett 2

EVERETT, Pa. -- Colby Sowers had three goals and an assist to lead McConnellsburg past Everett.

Jesse Swope and Codey Christy each had two goals and an assist and Robbie Christopher and Nathan Swope each had an assist for the Spartans.


Smithsburg 28, Brunswick 7

HCC Turkey Trot 5K

The eighth annual Hagerstown Community College Turkey Trot 5K, kids race and food drive will be held Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, beginning and ending at the HCC athletic complex. All participants are encouraged to bring a few canned or nonperishable goods to the event. Five grand prizes will be given away via drawings, with tickets earned for each food item donated.
