Cumberland man hurt in I-70 crash in critical condition

WILLIAMSPORT -- A Cumberland, Md., man who was injured in a Wednesday morning crash on Interstate 70 was in critical condition Thursday morning at the University of Maryland R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Timothy Tyler Wilt, 23, was driving a 1996 Nissan Altima west on I-70 near the 22-mile marker, about midway between Williamsport and Clear Spring, when the car drifted off the left side of the road, Maryland State Police said.

Wilt overcorrected his steering, causing the car to cross back over the lanes and go off the right side of the road, where it hit a concrete culvert and flipped over, police said.

The accident was reported at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Washington Co. deputies respond to calls

The Washington County Sheriff's Department responded to the following incidents on Wednesday, according to Lt. Mark Knight:


o At 4:24 a.m., deputies found a vehicle, with the engine running and no one around, at the intersection of Elmwood Road and Virginia Avenue in Halfway. The vehicle was towed and illegal drugs were found inside.

o At 9:19 a.m., a report of 20 to 25 headstones knocked over or damaged at River View Cemetery in Williamsport. Anyone who knows or has seen who is doing this is asked to call the Washington County Sheriff's Department at 301-791-3020.

o At 1:07 p.m. a woman was detained for allegedly shoplifting from The Bon Ton at Valley Mall in Halfway. Store officials were expected to file charges.

o At 5:48 p.m., a domestic dispute was reported in the 12000 block of Big Pool Road between a boyfriend and girlfriend. No charges were filed.

o At 7:17 p.m., four men allegedly shoplifted 15 coats from Columbia Sportswear Outlet at Prime Outlets at Hagerstown. Police are investigating.

o At 8:06 p.m., a man was detained for allegedly shoplifting at Target on Cole Road in Halfway. Store officials were expected to file charges.

o At 9:41 p.m., a theft of two prescriptions from a vehicle at Caribbean Accent Tanning, 3 St. Paul St. in Boonsboro, was reported.

o At 11:36 p.m., a domestic dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend was reported in the 18700 block of Diller Drive off Pennsylvania Avenue north of Hagerstown. Robert Allen Snowden III, 21, of the 18700 block of Diller Drive, was charged with second-degree assault.
