TOPS Chapter 462



TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 462 in Smithsburg met Oct. 9 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

John opened the meeting by talking about the fall rally he attended in Union Bridge, Md.

John passed out awards to the members for their losses over the past year. Ola had another week with a weight loss, making it 23 weeks without a gain.

On Thursday, Bob will lead the program.

TOPS is a nonprofit, weight-loss support group. The Smithsburg chapter meets Thursdays at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 51 S. Main St., Smithsburg.

Chewsville Lions Club



The Chewsville Lions Club will meet Tuesday, Oct. 20. A representative from Washington County Emergency Services will be the guest speaker.

The club will not hold its Benson Fruitcake fundraiser this year do to price increases.

The club will hold a boneless football ham raffle fundraiser. Tickets cost $5 for one or $8 for two. See any club member to purchase tickets. The drawing will be held Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Halloween event to be held at library



Attention teens - don't miss this blowout Halloween horrorfest at the Smithsburg Library Saturday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m.

The event will feature pumpkin bowling, a costume contest, games, music and refreshments. The event is for those ages 13 to 17.

Suicide Awareness Walk



On Saturday at 5 p.m., the Smithsburg JRL Community Center, a nonprofit group, will hold a Suicide Awareness Walk at Veterans Park, at 66 W. Water St. in Smithsburg. There is no registration fee.

If you would like to receive a T-shirt and light stick, you are asked to raise at least $25 in donations or sponsorships. The path through town will be lit with luminarias, white bags with blue glow sticks. The walk will be about two miles long. A Longaberger basket will be raffled off. A bake sale will also be held.

Registration begins at 4 p.m. All proceeds will go to the creation of the Smithsburg JRL Community Center. For information, call 301-824-2645 or e-mail linthicumlisa@yahoo.com.

College fair



The 2009 Washington County College Fair will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Athletic, Recreation and Community Center at Hagerstown Community College. Representatives from more than 100 colleges, universities and technical schools in the Mid-Atlantic region will be on hand to meet with prospective students.
