Courtyard at schools taking shape

October 13, 2009

CLEAR SPRING - On a recent Saturday, members of the Clear Spring Garden Club continued a project of planting the courtyard between Clear Spring Middle and Senior High schools.

Four large maple trees that had been there since the schools were built were removed and their stumps were ground by Andy Downs, who worked for six hours in the rain to complete that project.

Topsoil donated by John Horst was placed in the cement planters so the new Alberta spruce, Creeping Jenny and Vinca Minor would flourish.

Dan Burke, a former Clear Spring resident, gave the club $500 to complete the project.

Ten members participated. In addition to Downs, other workers were Cindy Downs, president of the garden club, Carol Miller, Isabelle Stottlemyer, Scott Thomas, Linda McNamee, Junedale and Andy Anderson, Don and Laurie Blair.

"We changed the area from an eyesore to a pleasant garden area to be enjoyed by everyone at the two schools, as well as the community," Cindy Downs said.
