Heart of Maryland Libaries Quilt on display

October 12, 2009

The Heart of Maryland Libraries Quilt is on display at Washington County Free Library through Tuesday, Oct. 13.

This 27-square quilt represents libraries across Maryland. The center square depicts the historic Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, one of the oldest public libraries in Maryland.

Some squares were completed by local quilting groups, some by experienced quilters and scrapbook makers, and others were made by quilters with no previous experience.

Maryland Library Association Executive Director Margaret Carty envisioned the idea of a state quilt two years ago. Squares were produced by about 130 individuals representing 18 county library systems, two college and university libraries, three county school systems, the Library for the Blind & Physically Handicapped, the Department of Library Development Services, the Maryland Association of School Librarians and The Maryland Library Association.
