Florence Louise Lord, 82

Florence Louise Lord, 82, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, while surrounded by her loving family.

Born March 30, 1927, in Hedgesville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Phillip and Louise Gosnell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold J. Lord; her brother, James Gosnell; her sister, Doris Jean Gosnell; her daughter, Pamela Lord May; and one granddaughter, Jodie Maria May.

A selfless and nurturing mother, Florence is survived by her five children, Mike Lord and wife, Marilyn; Deborah Fortney and husband, Eric; Dana Clowser and husband, Mark; Kim Lord; and H.J. Lord II and fiance, Carol Reilly.

Florence also will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, whom she also deeply influenced, Chad Lord, Erika South, Mike Lord, Shanna Moxley and Jessica Fortney; and her great-grandchildren, McKenna Lord, McKaylee May Price, Anthony Moxley and Morgan Lord.

She also is survived by two sisters, Marion Farling and Helen Caldwell; two brothers, William and Dale Gosnell; and dear friend and sister-in-law, Louise Gosnell.

Florence graduated from Hedgesville High School in 1945. She spent most of her working career as owner and operator of Lord Bros., where she retired, then later worked as a sales consultant for The Mirror Boutique.

A devoted, compassionate, loving mother, grandmother and sister, Florence also was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cross-stitch, needlepoint and watching sports. Her grandchildren fondly remember her as their No. 1 fan at all of their sporting events. Florence was an exceptional cook whose infamous fried chicken, lasagna and apple pies often were the center of many family gatherings and memories. Florence also was known for starting the tradition of summer vacation at the beach with six children in tow. The family continued this tradition for years following.

The family would like to thank Florence's caretakers who acted as true angels, giving her the best home care and lots of love - Beth Butts, Donna Elliott, Sharon Lambert, Heaven Puffinbarger, Pat Stotler, Hospice of the Panhandle and the Berkeley County Senior Center.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Msgr. Patrick Fryer as celebrant. Interment prayers will be said at Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.
