DAV officer to be in Hagerstown

A Disabled American Veterans (DAV) service officer will be at the Hagerstown VA Clinic, Hub Plaza Building, 1101 Opal Court, the third Thursday of each month. The date for this month's visit is 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15. The service officer will be available to prepare claims for VA benefits and provide information to veterans and their family members.

Bring a copy of your military discharge, DD 214 or other service record, VA claim number if one was issued, and any correspondence or rating decision information.

Suicide awareness walk planned

The Smithsburg JRL Community Center and Lisa Linthicum will host a suicide awareness walk at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Veterans Park, Smithsburg.

The objective of the walk is to help remove the taboo of suicide and increase awareness of this rising epidemic and to raise funds to establish the Smithsburg JRL Community Center to provide a safe place for the neighborhood.


The SCAS Committee of Smithsburg will host a Health and Safety Day from 1 to 4 p.m. The event will feature health professionals, county services, car seat checks, police dog demonstrations, EMS and local fire department, and police department demonstrations.

Walkers who raise $25 will receive a T-shirt and glow stick. Call 301-824-2645.

MSO offers discounts to state employees

The Maryland Symphony Orchestra will offer discounted tickets to Maryland state employees who have been furloughed through the "Arts Step Up" program created by Maryland Citizens for the Arts (MCA).

The MSO will offer a "two-for-one" opportunity for its MasterWorks concerts in October, November, February, March and April. Bring a state employee identification badge and come in person to the MSO office at 30 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets start at $22. Processing fees will be waived. Tickets may also be purchased on the evening or afternoon of a performance at The Maryland Theatre box office.
