Becca Morgan had 15 kills and Sara Michael had 14 assists and five kills to pace Hagerstown Community College to a 25-13, 25-9, 25-10 Maryland JuCo Conference sweep of Howard on Wednesday.

Ashlyn Rebok had 13 assists, Hailee Growden had seven digs and Emma Dalton had five service aces for the Hawks (18-3, 8-0).

Mency gets preseason honor

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- Merrimack College junior Dee Mency, a Hagerstown native, has been named to The Sporting News' NCAA Division II Preseason All-American squad as an honorable mention.

Mency averaged 17.2 points per game last season as Merrimack went 21-9. He has 1,023 career points.

Fox's Orange nationally ranked

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse University men's and women's teams -- coached by former Hagerstown resident Chris Fox -- are both ranked higher than they've ever been in the history of their programs.

The Orange men are No. 11 and the women are No. 15 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll.

Fox, who's in his fifth year as Syracuse head coach, is a former world-class runner. He was inducted into the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame this past summer.

Wertner earns NEC honor

LORETTO, Pa. -- Saint Francis junior Tim Wertner, a Greencastle-Antrim graduate, has been named the Northeast Conference Athlete of the Week in recognition of his strong showing at the Paul Short Invitational last Friday.

Wertner was the top finisher for the Red Flash in the Brown Race, placing third out of 332 runners on the 8K course in 25:11.

Quinn scores for American

MANASSAS, Va. -- American University freshman Kellie Quinn, a 2009 Williamsport graduate, recently placed 68th at the George Mason Invitational. She covered the 6K course in 26:30 and was the fourth scorer for eighth-place American.
