Mail Call

October 07, 2009

"I have an idea to do something with the stink bugs. The government's always willing to give money away and spend money for everything else -- why don't they put a penny of bounty on each stink bug, box them up and send them to Mexico and China? Because they're getting everything else we got, so they might as well have them, too."

-- Washington County

"I read in The Herald-Mail recently where someone from Williamsport said to give all the low-income uninsured Medicaid, and have them pay a premium according to their income. That might be good in some cases, but a lot of these women with low incomes and children getting government assistance have chose to live this way, because they have live-in boyfriends."

-- Hagerstown

"I can't believe it. Someone actually reads the Mail Call. I was leaving the other night, and there it was. The stop sign was installed at the driveway at Hub Plaza, leading onto Opal Court. Thank you."

"I would like the people of Williamsport to know that if they have an opportunity to see the Williamsport High School choir perform anywhere in the area, please go and do it. We had an opportunity to see them last night. They and their director did a wonderful, wonderful job. They did classical pieces of music, and they performed very tastefully."

-- Williamsport

"I really wish all I had to worry about was stink bugs."

-- Hagerstown

"I'm calling, I'd like to be able to see that the military brings our strong, healthy men home from Iraq and Afghanistan."

-- Mapleville

"Politicians and diapers all have one thing in common. They all need changed for the same reason."

-- Hagerstown

"With the stink bug situation -- I called last year when they were really bad, the agricultural department, and they told me 'We have no idea. We do not know what to do with them.' I said well, you plan on checking into some way of finding out to do? 'We don't know what to do.' ... Give me a break. Do something. It's ridiculous."

-- Brownsville

"To the people that think all retired people are lazy and not productive: I want you to know that the retirees have worked all their lives for what you are getting today, in your wages and salary. And I hope the Medicaid is gone when you get there, and you have no insurance."

-- Clear Spring

"This is about Monday morning's paper. A person there ... wanting to lay off city workers. A person there saying, a lady is saying her husband was laid off a year ago and he still can't find a job, and he wants to know why, she wants to know why the City is doing this in bad economy times. Well, when you don't have the money -- far as I'm concerned, the City has too many workers now."

-- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the comment about the homeless. In today's economy, one doesn't know what'll happen to each and every one of us, the way jobs, things are being cut and jobs, how people are trying to find, struggling to find jobs. ... There are plenty of people struggling, and people need to reach out to the homeless people."

-- Hagerstown

"As per Monday, Oct. 5's Herald-Mail newspaper, had an article on the rehabilitation center in Franklin County and Washington County, was thinking about the same thing. I think it's time the state and the county stops, rethinks that, and gives back the pay raises that they took away to the people that work in the jails and prisons, to help get morale back up where it belongs."

-- Hagerstown

"I would like to humbly suggest that instead of going on about what other people can do with their jobs and their decisions ... that you people who are telling us about that should get down on your knees and thank God for the gifts that he gave you that enabled you to apparently make excellent decisions all the way through your life, and earn marvelous money in wonderful jobs. Because I've got to tell you, that's not true of most of us out here on the planet."

-- Hagerstown

"I was recently at a fast food restaurant where I saw a employee yell at a mother for her children making a mess in a restaurant. I have never heard of anything like this before. Yes, our kids do make messes, but if they're cleaning the lobby, that's part of their job. ... Yes, making them behave is one thing, but trying to keep the tables from not getting dirty or the floor not getting dirty?"

-- Hagerstown

"I just want to put out an idea for fixing our state budget: Take away programs for inmates locked up in our state prison. That's where all our tax dollars go. Let's rehabilitate and re-educate people that are locked up and don't have any chance of getting our for the next 15 years. What good does that do? Talk to your senators and everybody else about getting that taken care of. They don't need it."

-- Hagerstown

"Does anyone know of a humane way to get rid of mice? The things that they have, the (poison), they eat that and then your house smells really bad. They go somewhere and die. Then the things that they stick fast to, that is totally torture. I could never do that. I really wish someone could help me."
