BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Jean Newkirk Bodie, age 77, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at Berkeley Springs Rehabilitation & Nursing while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born March 20, 1932, in Pocahontas County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Malcolm James and Vitalis Henry James Foley.

She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. She attended public schools in Berkeley Springs and was a graduate of Piedmont High School, Piedmont, W.Va.


For many years, Jean had been the owner and operator of the Log Cabin Inn in Hancock, Md. She was a member and administrative secretary of the Washington County Licensed Beverage Association and also the Maryland Licensed Beverage Association, where she had served as treasurer. She had been a homemaker in recent years.

She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Harry Conrad Bodie, at home; one son, James Ellis Newkirk, Baltimore, Md.; two grandchildren, Jeremy Ellis Newkirk, Laurel, Md., and Lesley Alice Newkirk Lightfoot, Rockville, Md.; and two great-grandchildren, Emma Grace Newkirk and Harrison Ellis Newkirk, both of Laurel, Md.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Ellis Newkirk on April 7, 1967.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 95 Union St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with the Rev. Frank S. Coe officiating. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Clear Spring, Md.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 180 S. Washington St., Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.
