Mail Call

October 05, 2009

"I was saddened to hear this week from her husband, the Shafer lady, that her and her husband used to have the big Christmas display in Greencastle at their home, and I believe your paper, The Herald-Mail, did a story concerning their display, but I was saddened to hear this week that she passed away in June. She was a very nice lady. Her and her husband bought me breakfast a few times at the Homestyle Family Restaurant in Greencastle."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"This is on the budget cuts. I got suggestions for the City of Hagerstown in making cuts. You need any help, just put it in the paper you need help making cuts, because I swore I'd come down and help you. I see in the paper where Mr. City Administrator says union and nonunion employees need to share the cuts. How about you big-talking people down in the city getting paid $175, $200,000 a year for doing nothing ... You should be making cuts first of the year instead of right now. You raised the water and sewer bill 5 percent, and the people can't even pay their light bill. So I think you people down at City Hall, none of you is much account far as I'm concerned. So if you need any help."

"I'd like to make a statement to the Mail Call, please. I hear these same complaints every day, every day, every day in Mail Call, about Obama's blamed for everything. But some of these people are their own problem. They don't want to get up and do anything. They want to yell all the time, and it's this person's fault, that person's fault. It's our fault. I'm saying me, I'm putting me in there, too, because if you don't want to do anything, don't blame anybody else but yourself. Get off your butt and try to do something."

"Caller, you really want the government to step in and spray for stink bugs? You really want to spray everywhere, not only outdoors but indoors as well, because that's the only way we'll ever get rid of them? The potential cost is enormous, and remember, they refused to spray state-owned, let alone private land thoroughly enough to eliminate gypsy moths, which are truly destructive, while stink bugs are admittedly annoying but basically harmless. Spray your own property at your own expense, but not mine or anyone else's with my tax dollars. I'd rather put up with the stink bugs than another wasteful, bureaucratic government boondoggle to eliminate them - which you can be certain it would never do anyway."

- Frederick, Md.

"Somebody in Mail Call is talking about they wish people would stop bashing the president about health care. Well, it's not that great of a plan, if you actually read it and understand it. I think that's part of the problem with most people. You just don't understand it. It's funny, because, you know, for eight years the Democrats bashed President Bush on every single thing they could think of, even things he had nothing to do with. Your immaculate president, your thoughtless president, makes so many mistakes already. Republicans and Democrats, you're all cattle. Stop following the line."

"I don't understand the confusements over these stink bugs. Find out how the stores are keeping them out. I have been in many stores, I go shopping regularly, I've never once seen a stink bug in them, or on the outside. I would like to know how they keep rid of them."

"Medication bottles: Mail Call will not put addresses or phone numbers in, and there's no way I can get in contact with you. Maybe you can put it in Giveaways and put your phone number in."

- Hagerstown

"I hope you put this in the paper. I respect the governor of Virginia, Kaine, for saying there's no way he can grant clemency to Muhammad for going around shooting all these people. And he had to commit other crimes to afford to travel - probably done robberies and everything. He should have been put to the chair to start with. So should his partner."

- Hagerstown

"I don't know if Obama is a racist or not, but he sure is a second Ahmadinejad. He's trying to turn this country into a dictatorship, and we do not have royalty in this country, so why does he have czars?"

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"Well, it looks like payback time for the gangster from Chicago's cronies that helped get him elected. How many millions do you think they will stand to make after he pushes for the Olympics to be held there?"

- Maugansville

"I'm now reading in Wednesday morning's paper that Forrest's DUI case could be dismissed. This is another way of people in higher-ups getting their fingers smacked, and letting them go. You know, he went for a drive on a Sunday morning at 3-something, and was drunk. Come on, now. He's an average citizen. He needs to be given ... that it's not who you are, it's what you do. It's just, I don't know. It's disgusting."
