Police find missing woman after hours of searching

October 04, 2009

A 71-year-old woman of "diminished capacity" who was the object of an extensive search by authorities Sunday afternoon was found apparently unhurt at 6 p.m. on Virginia Avenue by a Maryland State Police trooper.

Gloria Crumbacker walked away from her home in the first block of East Baltimore Street around 10 a.m. although authorities weren't notified for nearly four hours, Hagerstown City Police said.

She was taken to Washington County Hospital for a checkup, police said.

A command post had been established at the Washington County Hospital parking deck as police searched throughout Hagerstown on foot and in patrol cars.

A bloodhound and Maryland State Police were brought in to aid in the search at 4 p.m.

Police said the woman was wearing an Operation Lifesaver transmitter on her ankle when she was reported missing. It wasn't known if that transmitter led police to her.
