Louise Elaine Johnston, 81, died after a long illness on Oct. 2, 2009, in Hagerstown, Md.

Born Jan. 13, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Bertha Irene and Jesse Ellsworth Warner of Smithsburg. Louise was raised by the late John and Marjorie (Warner) Riter of Hagerstown.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Hilda Brandenburg, Charlotte Wolfe and Sharon King; and three brothers, Glenn Warner, George Warner and Jesse Warner Jr.

She is survived by her husband, Maurice Franklin Johnston of Hagerstown, whom she married Oct. 8, 1950. Surviving family members include one daughter, Carolyn Crampton; one son, Michael Johnston; two grandsons, Benjamin Crampton and Peter Crampton; two sisters, Thelma Hockensmith and Carolyn Delauter; one brother, Harold Warner; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Louise was a graduate of Hagerstown High School Class of 1947. She attended the West Virginia College of Beauty Culture, and worked for a time as an apprentice hairdresser. Louise was employed by the Leiter Brothers Department Store in downtown Hagerstown for many years. After her marriage, she served as corporate secretary for the M.S. Johnston Co. She was an avid gardener and loved duckpin bowling. As a devoted wife, mother and grandmother she will be greatly missed by her family.

A memorial service will be held at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at 7 p.m.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
