Permits will be issued for three- to five-year periods, based on each farm's management objectives. Permittees will be subject to a one year probationary period.

Preserving the historic landscape associated with the C&O Canal is a vital part of the park's mission. In an effort to preserve the agricultural component of the historic landscape, the park manages lands through an Agricultural Use Program.

More than 1,200 acres of hay, row crop and pasture lands are included in the program. The available lands are distributed throughout Allegany, Washington, Frederick, and Montgomery counties.
